UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
CARSTEN HANSEN, OF BENSON, NEBRASKA.
To all who;
GATE.
Application filed November 13, 1923. Serial No. 674,502.
n it may concern:
HANSEN, OItI- zen of the United States, residing at Benson,
in the coun braslra, has
ty oi? Douglas and State of Neinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a novel construction of a gate for use on roadways, on farms, ranches and all such places where there is need or such gates; said gate consists of two units hingedly connected in the center of the gate and hingedly connected at one end to a metal post, on which metal post the complete gate swings in a horizontal plane.
The hinge connection of the two units allows the outer section thereof to Fold against the section attached hingedly to the metal post, and the two sections in folded position to swing right angle to the normal to a position at closed position when the gate is closed.
A further object is to suspend the gate on a metal frame, the posts of which are set in concrete, the upper horizontal member of which frame forms a runway on which op crates a. concave roller which is carried by a vertical member attached to the outer end or the gate the gate.
A 1 urther post at the which supports the free end of object is to provide a metal outer end of the gate in a biliurcation of which the free end of the gate is received.
A further object is to provide a latch consisting or". two bars, pivoted at one end attached to held in position behind keepers to the gate, thereby providing a suitable fastening means closed posit With the ion.
above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts iorth, show claimed, it
as hereinafter set 11 in the drawing, described and being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be ma de Within the scope of what is for holding the gate in claimed without departing trom the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of the gate and gate frame in closed position. I
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the opposite side of .thegate to that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 post.
Figure 4; is a detail view of the concave roller swivel bracket and a portion of the vertical member attached to the gate.
Referring to the drawing,the-numeral 1 designates the U-shaped gate frame, 2 and 3 the'vertical end posts thereof and 4 the horizontal portion of same, which portion forms a runway for the grooved pulley 5, which pulley is carried by brackets 6 pivotally connected at 7 to a bracket 8 carried by the supporting member Q'for the free end 10 of the gate. Hingedly connected at 11 to the posts 2 of the frame is the gate section 12, which section is adapted to swing in a horizontal plane during the opening and closing of the gate. Hingedlv connected to the outer end of the gate section 12 at 13 is asecond gate section, 14:, which section is adapted to be folded onto the gate section 12 during a gate opening operation, at which time the outer end of the gate section 14 is supported and guided by the supporting roller 5 which moves longitudinally on the horizontal portion 4 of the gate frame.
The gate post 3 at its lower end is pro vided With a Y-shaped member 15, to the downwardly extending arms of which are connected spaced vertical pipes 16, and between which pipes the free end of the gate section 14: is received when the gate is in closed position, thereby preventing swaying or bodily movement in a horizontal plane of the gate as a whole. Gate posts 2 and 3 are preferably anchored in concrete members 17 imbed-ded in the ground thereby forming a rigid structure, and by providing the spaced pipes 16, it will be seen that the frame as a whole is braced against tilting or bending when the weight of the gate is to either is a fi ont view of the bifurcated side thereof, for instance when the gate is open.
Secured to the adjacent ends of the gate sections 12 and 14 are Vertically disposed bars 1.8, to one of which are pivotally connected at 19, latch bars 20, which latch bars extend across the hinged points, of the gate sections 12 and 14:, and are received in keepers 21 carried by the gate section 12, and consequently when the gate sections 12 and let are in the same vertical plane hold said gate sections rigidly in said plane with the free end of the gate section it between the pipe 16, and consequently the gate is locked in closed position. The gate section 12 is provided with a guide bar 22,;whi'ch guides the latch bars 20 in their movement. Latch bars 20, adjacent their free ends" are connected together by. means of the connect ing bar 23, consequently when the operator grasps knob 24 and pulls upwardly: on the same, both latch bars will simultaneously. move and the movement thereof is substan tially a parallel one.
From the above it WillbB seen that a. foldable gate is provided, which is particularly adapted for use on farms, the structure is rigid, the free end" of the gate rigidly supported and guided during thegate folding operation and the free end of the gate is held against movement in a horizontal plane by engagement between the pipes 16 when the latching device is in locked position.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A gate comprising a U-shaped frame having vertical end posts, one of said vertical end posts having its lower end provided with a bifurcation, a gate formed from hinged sections disposed between said posts, the outer end of one of said hinged sections be ing hingedly mounted on one of the posts of the frame, the outer end, of the other hinged" section beingdispos-ed in the bifurcation of the other post, a bar carried by the outer end of the last named section and extending upwardly, a bracket pivotally connected'to the upper end'of said her, a guide roller carried by said bracket, said guide roller being; longitudinaliy movable on the horizontal portion of the U-shaped frame and latching means extending across the hinging point of the gate section and forming neans whereby said gate sections may be held in the same vertical longitudinal plane with the free end of the gate in the bifurcation of one of the posts.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature.
