DIAL FOR TINIEPIECES.

Be it known that I, ALMERON M. LANE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dials for Timepieces, of which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to dials for timepieces, and has for its object an improvement in such articles whereby one of the time-indicating characters of the dial will be depressed from the main part of said dial, thus a'li'ording space for the escapement and permitting' the depressed character to be readily visible, as will be hereinafter explained.

Further Objects of the invention are the provision of improved means for securing the depressed character selected in position on the frame back of the escapement and ot' other details in construction to be hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals designate similar parts throughout the several Views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a timepiece, showing what may be termed the csupplemental dial back of the escapement-wheel. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partiallyin section, showing the parts to which the supplemental dial is attached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fi g'. 4 is a front elevation of one member of the supplemental dial. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of another member of the supplemental dial.

Referring' to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the main dial,which is perforated at 6 to expose the escapement-wheel 7, thus enabling a part of the machinery to be visible, imparting an appearance ot' life or movement to the timepiece and an all-round pleasing effect, which greatly enhances the value of the same.

Designated by the numeral 8 is a plate having a depending arm 8 and lateral projections 82, having perforated ears 83. This plate is provided with lugs or lips 8'i and 8' and, as illustrated in Fig. 4, is in the shape of a blank, which may readily be punched from sheet metal, and it is slotted or recessed at 8 to receive the arbor of the usual pallet and is perforated at 87 to slip over the arbor of the escapement-wheel.

Posts 9 secure the main dial 5 to the Jframe of the timepiece, and to these posts the ears 83, which are bent to project laterally from the blank 5, are secured by screws 10, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.

Designated by 12 is a cross-strip secured to the rear oi' the sash-frame of the timepiece, and to said strip the projection 8 of plate 8 is attached at 13, as illustrated in Fig. 3.

To the plate 8 the supplemental dial 14, containing the character to be viewed through the opening 6 and escapemcnt-wheel 7, is shown secured by bending upon it the lugs or clips 8i 85, as illustrated in Fig. 3, although it may be attached in other ways without departure from the invention. This supplemental dial is'shown as a section removed from the main dial 5 and containing the character XTL and said supplemental dial is notched at 15 to receive the clip 84 and at 16 for the reception or' the lugs or clips 85. It is also notched at 14 to register with slot 8"' in the plate 8, to thus clear the arbor of the pallet, is provided with minute-indicating marks 17 to continue the circle of the main dial, and it is perforated at 18 to receive the arbor of the escapement-wheel 7.

From what has been stated it will be seen that a compact and strong supplemental-dial attachment is provided, one that is not in the way of any parts of the movement and one that will rigidly secure the supplemental dial in place.

Vhile the invention is shown applied to a pendulum clock, it is not limited in use to any special kind of timepiece.

Changes may be made in various details ot' the invention, which is not limited to the precise devices shown and described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. The combination, with the main dial of a timepiece, said dial having an opening, of a supplemental dial having a character located back of the opening in the main dial; means i'or rigidly securing the supplemental dial to the frame; and an escapement-wheel mounted in front of the supplemental dial.

2. The combination, with the dial of a timepiece, said dial having an opening to expose the escapement-Wheel; said escapement-Wheel; a supplemental dial containing a character; and means for securing said supplemental dial in position back of the opening and said escapement-wheel.

3. The combination, With the main dial of a timepiece having an opening, of a supplemental dial carrying one of the characters of the main dial; a plate to which the supplemental dial is connected; and means for securing said plate to the frame of the timepiece.

4. The combination, With a main dial having an opening, of a plate carrying one of the characters ot' the main dial; an escapement- Wheel; and means for securing said plate in position back of the opening in the main dial and the eseapement-Wheel.

5. The combination, with a main dial having an opening, of a supplemental-dial attachment consisting of a plate having arms; means for securing said arms to the frame back of the main dial and an escapement-Wheel in front of said plate.

6. rl`he combination, with a main dial having an opening, of a suplemental dial carrying one of the characters of the main dial; a plate having clips for retaining the supplemental dial; and means for securing said plate in position on the frame hack ol' the opening in the main dial.

7. The combination, with a main dial having an opening, of a plate having clips, lateral arms and a projection; means for securing said plate to the frame ot' the timepiece back of the opening in the main dial; and a supplemental dial carried by the plate and secured by the clips thereof, said supplemental dial being visible through the opening of the main dial.

8. The combination, with the lrame olI a timepiece of posts thereon; a cross-strip on the frame of the timepiece; a plate having ears secured to the posts and a projection attached to the cross-strip; a supplemental dial carried by the plate; and a main dial having an opening for the inspection of the supplemental dial.

9. The combination, with a main dial having an opening, o'l' an escapement-wheel adjacent to said opening; a plate perforated to receive the arbor of the escapement-wheel; and a supplemental dial secured to the plate back of said opening and escapement-wheel.
