SHOWER BATH APPARATUS.

NrrED STAT s Patented November 29, 1904.
CHARLES E. IVALLEN, OF MINNEAIPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO NANNIE L. VVALLEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOWER-BATH APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,209, dated November 29, 1904.
Application filed July 18, 190 Serial No. 216.982. (N0 model.)
My invention relates to certain new and use-- ful improvements in shower-bath apparatus;
and its object is to produce a device of this class which shall have certain advantages which will appear more fully and at large in the course of this specification.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features which are clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described herein.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a bath-tub with my improved shower-bath apparatus in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the line 3 3 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4: is a detail transverse section in the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, A is an ordinary bath-tub having a substantially vertical foot or, side walls a, flaring slightly, and a head a sloping at a considerable angle, as bath-tubs are ordinarily made. The tub is fitted with a Siamese faucet B-that is to say, a faucet of the type where the hot and cold water pipes meet at the center of the faucet and pass down in a single stream. The outlet-nipple of this faucet is shown threaded at the bottom, as are most of the faucets of this kind. To the lower end of the nipple is secured a fitting C, at the lower end of which is a stop-cock D, adapted to close the fitting or permit the water to flow directly through it, as desired. Two pipes E are screwed into the sides of the fitting C above the stop-cock D, so that when the stopcock D is closed the water will flow from the faucet B out through the pipes E. These pipes E extend to the sides of the tub, as illustrated, and are bent to lie immediately inside of and near the top edge of the tub. These pipes E are shown with a slight upward bend in the transverse portions thereof, by which an extra length of pipe is provided, so that by bending the pipe E the structure may be made to fit any tub tightly.
A U shaped perforated tube F extends around the head of the tub, and its free ends enter the ends of the pipes E and are slidable therein. The curved end of the tube F is supported entirely by engagement with the slanting head of the tub.
The operation of my improved device will be readily apparent. When the water is turned on in the faucet B and the stop-cock D is opened, the water passes through the fitting into the tub in the ordinary way. \Vhen, however, the stop-cock is closed, the water passes out through the pipes E into the U- shaped tube F and issues from the perforations therein in the form of a fine spray.
My device is particularly advantageous for the reason that it can be readily adapted to any bath-tub provided with a Siamese faucet, and adjusts itself perfectly to all sizes of tubs.
I am aware that shower-baths have heretofore been made which lie along the upper edge of a bath-tub; but my device differs from these devices in being composed of two longitudinal telescoping portions, so that the shower-bath supports itself against the slanting head of the tub regardless of the length of the tub, and in the additional feature of being transversely adjustable to engage the sides of the tub.
I realize that considerable variation is pos sible in the details of this construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form herein shown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a fitting adapted to be attached to a faucet, of a perforated tubular ring conforming substantially with the curves of the wall of a bath-tub in communication with said fitting, said ring being composed of two longitudinal telescoping portions, whereby the end of said ring farthest removed from the faucet can be made to support itself on the slanting head of the bath-tub.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination With a fitting adapted to be attached to a faucet, of pipes extending laterally from said fitting and bent to lie along the longitudinal walls of a tub, and a U-shaped perforated tube telescoping at the ends of said pipes, whereby the curved end of said tube can be made to support itself against the slanting head of any bath-tub.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a fitting adapted to be attached to a faucet, of a perforated tubular
