CARPET-CLAMP.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,034, dated. November 15, 1904.
Application filed May 7, 1904. Serial No. 206,923. (No model.)
To all whowt it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS GRAPE, a resident of Canajoharie, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet- Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Y
My invention relates to an improved carpetclamp, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character of simple and inexpensive construction, easily operated, and which will most effectually secure a carpet or other like device or material to a line or other support and is especially designed for securing a carpet in position while cleaning or beating the same.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 is a view in elevation, taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
My improved clamp comprises in the main two clamping- jaws 1 and 2, both beveled at one end, as shown at 3, and dished, as shown at 4:, to form contacting holding enlargements- 5 between said beveled ends and the dished portions. The jaw 1 is approximately straight, while jaw 2 has a curved extension 5 at one end to meet the end of jaw 1, and a wire spring 6 is located in longitudinal grooves 7 in the outer faces of the jaws, is seated in a groove around the curved meeting ends of the jaws and has its ends bent through openings 8 in the jaws and bent against the inner faces of the jaws to firmly secure the spring-wire in place. This wire not only serves to open or separate the jaws, but also acts to hinge them together and hold them in proper formation with relation to each other.
A threaded bolt 9 is secured at one end in jaw l and extends through an elongated opening 1.0 in jaw 2 and has a set-nut 11 screwed thereon, and it will be observed that by screwing this nut 11 inwardly the jaws can be firmly clamped on the object and be maintained at any pressure thereon which may be necessary to perform the service desired.
Great difficulty has been experienced in securing a clamp or pin of this character capable of holding a carpet in position on a line or like support while beating or cleaning the same, and while my improved clamp was especially designed for this work it is not restricted to such use and may be employed for various other uses, and it will be observed that by constructing the clamp as above described the spring is so protected by its position in the grooves of the jaws that it is out of harms way and is not liable to become injured or disconnected from the jaws.
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
' Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clamp comprising two jaws, one jaw having a curved extension at one end to meet the end of the other jaw, a spring-wire projecting through openings in the jaws and clamped therein and located in grooves in the jaws and curved extension and which spring is adapted to separate the jaws, and means for clamping said jaws together.
2. A clamp comprising two jaws having longitudinal grooves in their outer faces, one jaw provided with a curved extension having an external groove, said curved extension bearing against the other jaw, a spring-wire hinge embracing the jaws at one, end thereof, the free ends of said wire projecting transversely through the jaws and secured thereto, said spring-wire located in the grooves in the jaws and in the said curved extension and operating to separate the free ends of the jaws, and means for forcing the free ends of the jaws toward each other.
through the other member and a nut on the free end of said bolt.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
LEW IS GRAPE.
