ISRAEL BLOCK,- OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GAS-H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 775,025, dated November 15, 1904. Application filed December 17, 1903. Serial No. 185,509. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsRAnL BLocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gas-heaters; and it consists in constructing the same in' the form of a casing mounted on a tube and provided with chambers and inlet and outlet openings, as fully set forth hereinafter and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved heater; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation; Fig. 8, a plan view.
The heater consists of a hollow casing A, which is mounted upon a tube B, open at both ends, the upper end communicating with the bottom of the casing and the lower end being pressed to form screw-threads 1, adapted to the screw-threads of a flange 2 of a cap O. The bottom of the cap has perforations and a central opening t, surrounded by a flange or short tube 5, that receives the gas-burner to which the heater is applied and serves as a means of connecting the two and supporting the heater properly upon the burner.
The casing A consists of three partsthe dished or conical bottom 6, the inverted dishshaped top 7, and a transverse partition 8, which divides the casing in to two chambers my. The bottom 6 has in it perforations 9 of any desired character and arrangement, and the top has a series of perforations 10, near the outer edge at the lowest part, and upper perforations 12. Preferably these parts are all made of sheet metal, the meeting edges of the parts 6, 7, and 8 being brought together and connected by turning the flange of one part over that of the other. By making the cap C of a separate threaded piece it may be drawn up or formed of soft metal and readily applied to the tube B, and when it is required to change the character of this part to adaptthe heater-to a different form or size of a gasburner one cap can be removed and another substituted without any change in the permanent parts of the structure.
The heater is put into use by mounting it upon a gas-burner and turning on the gas, whichwill flow upward into the chamber fl drawing up with it a supply of air, which passes through theopenings 3, and the air and gas miX in the chamber ;1 and flow outward through the openingsf), where the mixture is ignited and burns'with a flame which laps the bottom of the casing and quickly heats all parts of the latter and the air of the room in which the heater is used. The air is not only heated by contact with the outer faces of the bottom and top parts 6 and 7, but a more extended heating-surface is attained by the arrangement of openings 10 12, the air flowing through the openings 10 and out of the openings 12 and being therefore heated by contact with the highly-heated upper surface of the partition 8 and the inner surface of the top portion 7, so that a much greater heating effect is secured than when no means is provided for permitting the air to flow into and out of the chamber By constructing the casing A with a flat top a dish, pot, or other receptacle can be placed on and supported by said top and the contents heated.
. Without limiting myself to the construction shown, I claim The combination of the casing A divided by a-partition into two chambers 0;, 1 and having openings 9, 10 and 12, a tube B open at the upper end and connected to the bottom of the casing and threaded at the lower end, and a cap 0 having a threaded flange engaging the threaded portion of the tube B, and with airinlet openings 3 and a central opening A surrounded by a flange 5, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISRAEL BLOCK.
