This invention relates to oil burners and ithas for its object to provide a novel attachment for an oil burner by which the heating capacity of the burner is improved.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel device of this type which can be readily applied to a burner which is in use and Without making any changes or alterations in the burner.
My improvements are in the nature of a flamespreading attachment to be applied to the top of an oil burner of the type having two annular combustion chambers and it is formed with a perforated cylindrical member adapted to rest on the top of the burner and an annular perforated flame-spreading member secured to the circular member but spaced therefrom and situated above the upper ends of the combination chambers.
The annular flame which issues from the outer combustion chamber is spread outwardly by the flame-spreading member and passes around the periphery of said member while the annular flame issuing from the inner combustion chamber passes up between the flame-spreading member and the cylindrical member, the two flames joining above the flame-spreading member.
The perforated cylindrical member provides for delivering added air to the inner flame and thereby improving combustion.
In order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawing a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claim.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view through an oil burner having my improvements applied thereto;

Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof.
In the drawing 1 indicates generally an oil burner of the type having two concentric combustion chambers. This oil burner is formed with the base member 2 which is illustrated as provided with two annular channels or fuel 45 troughs 3, 4 into which the oil or the oil vapor is fed. This base 2 supports a plurality of perforated cylinders 5, 6, 7, 8. The two outer cylinders 5 and 6 form between them an outer annular combustion chamber 9 which communicates with 0 the outer fuel trough or groove 3, and the inner perforated cylindrical walls 7 and 8 form between them an inner annular combustion chamber 10 which communicates at its lower end with the inner annular fuel trough 4.
55 The base 2 is shown as having openings or passages 11 therethrough through which air may be admitted to the space 12 between the combustion chambers, such, air passing into the combustion chambers through they perforations in the cylindrical walls 6' and'l. The base is also provided with a central opening 13 through which air is admitted to the central air chamber 14 within the inner cylindrical wall 8, the air in said chamber passing into the combustion cham ber 10 through the cylindrical wall 8.
15 indicates a cap plate which closes the upper end of the central air chamber 14 and 16 is a ring member which closes the upper end of the air chamber 12.
The parts thus far described are such as are 70. usually found in oil burners of this type and constitute no part of my present invention, which relates to the attachment shown in Figs. 2 and 3, that is designed to be applied to any oil burner of this type and which operates to increase the heating capacity of the burner. This attachment comprises a cylindrical perforated wall 17 which is adapted to rest on the cap plate 15, and an annular flame-spreading member 18, also preferably of perforated material which is secured to and 80.. carried by the cylindrical member 17 but is spaced therefrom so that an annular space 19 is provided between the inner edge 20 of the member 18 and the cylindrical member 1'7.
The member 18 may be secured to the cylin- 8511 drical member 17 in any approved way. As herein shown I have provided a plurality of brackets 21 which are angle shape and one leg of each of which is welded or otherwise secured to the cylindrical wall 17 and the other leg of each of which is welded or otherwise secured to the flamespreading member 18.
The member 18 is shown as being deformed around its periphery to produce the rib 22 on its under face, this construction providing the upwardly-curved surface 23 at the periphery of said member 18. Said member may conveniently be provided with a bale 24 which has its end secured to the cylindrical member 1'7 and by which the device can be manipulated.
The flame-spreading member 18 is shown as attached to the cylindrical member 17 at a distance above the lower end thereof so that when the device is in place on the burner with the cylindrical member 1'? resting upon the cap plate 15 the flame-spreading member 18 will be spaced a proper distance above the upper ends of the combustion chambers 9 and 10.
The annular space 19 between the inner edge of the flame-spreading member 18 and the cylindrical member 17 will be situated above the upper end of the inner combustion chamber 10 and the peripheral edge or" the flame-spreading member projects slightly beyond the outer combustion chamber 9.
When the burner is in operation the circular flame which issues from the upper end of the inner combustion chamber 10 will pass up through the annular space 19 as shown by the arrows'a, and the circular flame issuing from the outer combustion chamber 9 will be deflectedoutwardly by the member 18 and will spread around the peripheral edge thereof as shown by the arrows I). These two flames draw together above the member 18 and produce a relatively wide but annular flame which has superior heating characteristics. v I v The perforations in the cylindricalmember allows air to pass through it thereby furnishingdesirable oxygen for continuing the combustion of the flame issuing from the inner combustion chamber 10 and the flame issuing from the outer combustion chamber 9 receives added oxygen from the air as it is passing around. the flamespreading element 18.
The use of my improvement increases the efficiency of the burner by promoting better combustion.
The device can be inexpensively manufactured and can be readily applied to any burner of the type shown having two concentric combustion chambers.

An oil burner having two concentric burner chambers, a flame-spreading attachment provided with a cylindrical perforated member supported on the oil burner within the outline of the inner combustion chamber and a perforated annular flame-spreading member secured to the cylindrical member but spaced therefrom, the annular space between said flame-spreading member and cylindrical member being situated over the inner combustion chamber, whereby the flame 3 issuing from said inner combustion chamber passes up through said space while the flame from the outer combustion chamber passes around the periphery of said member. 7
