Description

A. B. CORBY.
Churn.
PatentedMay 5, 1868. I
. ALPHEUS e. OORBYI, 'OF-IBINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 77,462, dated May '5, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN census,
tithe tlgeimlt ttftttth in in ilgtttfltilttt 33mm ant mating part at llgttltmt.
TO ALLIWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALPHEUS B. Corner, of Binghamton, in the county of Broom'e, in the State of New York, I
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Mechanism usedfor the Purpose of Propellin'g or Operating Ohurns;- and I- do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact'descriptionoflthe construction and operation of the sauie, referencebeinghad to the accompanying drawings, making apart of permanentlyfattached to the axis of the drum.
this specification, inwhic h- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Figure 2, an end elevation; Figures 3, 4, 5, and 6, separate views of the various parts. Similar letters referto corresponding parts in the several figures.
'Thisinvention relates to that class of: churn-powers which are operated by a weight attached to clockwork machinery, and consists of the various devices hereinafter described. I
Fcnthe'purpose of supporting the mechanism employed, 1 construct the. frame, A B C D, of cast iron or other suitable material, and place it upon the platform or floor O of the stcutwood'en frame a b 0.11.
I Betweenthc sides A B, and supported by them, I place a strong drum, R, with journals on each. end, which work in the sides A B, and allow it to turn freely on its axis. The drum R carries-the spur-wheels W W, the latter movingfr'eely on the axis of the drum, exccptnhen held by the ratchet-wheel t, which is- In winding the weight-ropearound the drum, the spur-wheel W is held stationary, by the pawl p and spring 8. The spur-wheel W is permanentlyattached to the axis of the drum R, and turns theidrum, when operated by the pinion z and handle It. The pinion 2' is adjustable, so as to be thrownout. of mesh, as shown by dotted lines, While the operation'of churning is going on. I i l The weight-rope is carried up over a pulleyat the upper'end of the post a. As the weight, T, descends, it turns the spurqvheel W, which operates the pallets v 1 forming,'.in connection with the shafts g G and cam F, an escapement-apparatus, which regulates the motion of the pendulum P. To the pendulum-rod may be attached the connecting-bar, k,. for a rotary or oscillating-dasher, or a working-beam, as shown by dotted lines for vertical dashers.
'In the escapemen't-apparatus,of which; an enlarged view-is given in fig. 6, the pallets, are made with one. heavy end, so as to raise the point as it is release'dfrom the cogs of thespurwheel. To keep the pointrfrom rising too high, and to guide it back to the cogs again, I provide the guide-pieces, m and-mpivoted to the frame A, and'held in place by the springs r ri- To prevent the guide n fi'onadropping too low, the nin g/is and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
inserted, and to guide both the pallets v v, the pins e eare inserted near the points.
:The weight may beincreased or diminished, to adapt the power to the amount of creani or milk to i be churned.
The speed of the operation mayalso be regulated by altering the length of the working-beam,'or moving the end of the connecting-bar, 7c, upor. down on the-shaft of the dasher.
Having thus described the construction and operation-of my improvement, what I claiin' as my invention,
1. The escapem entn-pparatus, consisting of the pallets c1), cani F, shafts g (in and guides-m n, when used for the purposes described. I I
2. The arrangement and combinati on of said .escapem'ent-ap-paratus with the spur-wheels W W, drum R,
ratchet-wheel t, pinion 2', weight pendulum P, and frame A B O D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I v I v A. B; COREY;
Witnesses H. SANDERS, LANSING GRIFFIN.
