Be it known that I, ERNST Bitner, of the cty and State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Buttons, and I do'hereby'declare the following to'\be a f-ull, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to theeannexed drawing, making part 0f this specification,

wherein- 'Figure 1 is a'sectionof a button with my improvement.

Figure 3 is a face-view of the ornamental shell of the button.

In the manufacture of buttons, it has been usual heretofore to employ a wooden or metal mould, over which the silk or other ornamental wovcnfabric is stretched. This moul'd is sometimes grooved in such a manner that a corrugated appearance is given to the covering, vbut this ornamental-appearanceis limited to such shapes as will receive thesilk as drawn into foldslor pl'aits; thus, the ornamental surface ofsaid bnttonshas heretofore heen limited to acer-tain class of shapes or configurations. i

The nature'of my said invention consists in a button-shell, formed of a woven material, stiiiened and pressed between dies, so that any desired ornamental shape or form. can begiven to such shell, The button is very light and handsome, and particularly adapted touse 1-si.dress-trimming for ladies, becauseit is not liable thang down, from its weight..V The said shell is very cheap, easily made, and durable. The button-shell Z is shaped between dies of ,the vdesired form,y either hot or cold, according,r to the nature or condition of the material operated upon,fand IV employ sti'ening-material that will cause the ornamental snrfacelof the shell to maintain the shape given to it bythe dies, and be sulhcientlv 'rigid to withstand injury under ordinary circumstances.'

- I employ one, two, or more t'hicknessesot material toform the shell, the'outer one' being of the ornamental character required.v I sti'en the same, by saturating o r coating such materials with a suitable sizing or cement7 that also causes the thicknesses to adhere together, if there is more thanone thickness.

Where more than one thickness of material is used, thetwo or more sheets sliould be stuck together, andi'.

pressed, in a dry or partially-dry condition, to form thebutto'n-shell or face, and it but one sheet is'employed, it is to be saturated or coated enone side with such size orstili'cning, and pressed between dies, in adry or partiallydry condition, as aforesaid,'so' that,iunder-all`circumstances, the sti'ness of the button-shell results from the sizing or stiil'ening-material and press-nre, instead of from the metal orvwood mould heretofore employed,

and the dies consolidate the materials employed, and simultaneously form, harden, and stiii'en them.

' The s`tii'ening may be leiectcd. by a sheet of buckram, sized cotton-fabric, or similar materiaL-next'to the sillcor other Woven material forming the exterior ,of the shell, and s. sheet of paper onthe other side of such stifened fabric, whichpaper will'generally aid `in preventing adhesion of the'material to the dies.

The shell'd is secured at its edges to the base, a,'of the button by the ring e, and the button thus formedis light, cheap, durable, and highly ornamental, and the same is a new article of manufacture. What I claim, and desire to secure by Lettersl Patent, isv i A button-shell, formed of stiifened` woven or brous material, pressed up to the required-shape between dies, as specified, in combination with a base or shaiil ,'substant ially as set forth.
