Description
No. 773,856. PATENTED NOV. 1, 1904. W. B. DUNCAN, JR. CIGAR BAND REMOVER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 6. 1904.
Patented November 1, 1904.
PATENT EETcE.
IVILLIAM B. DUNCAN, JR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-BAND REMOVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,856, dated November 1, 1904.
Application filed January 6, 1904. Serial No. 187,880. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM BUTLER DUN- CAN, J12, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Band Removers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a paper or other kind of band used on a cigar on which the name of the brand of the cigar is commonly printed and to means for severing the band.
The object of my invention is to produce means which may be easily used without abrading or injuring the cigar-wrapper and which will readily sever the band, so that the band may be removed from the cigar.
Other objects will appear from the hereinafter description.
It is a well-known fact to cigar smokers that most bands are placed on cigars so tightly that it is difficult to remove them. In attempting to remove the band with the fingernail or with the point of aknife it frequently happens that the wrapper of the cigar is so punctured or torn as to injure the smoking quality of the cigar, if not to entirely destroy it.
My invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, which forms a part of my application.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a cigarprovided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a cigar as showing the wrapper and severing device thereon.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both views.
The part marked A represents the cigar, and B the ordinary band encircling the cigar.
G represents a thread, string, or cord under the band having the ends C thereof projecting beyond the edges of the band brought together and tied into a knot C forming a loop. This loop can be readily taken hold of by the thumb and finger and by pulling on it the band will be readily severed without marring the cigar-wrapper in the least. This severing device may be placed under the band after the band is put upon the cigar, or it may be put on the cigar at the'time that the wrapper is placed thereon.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Thecombination with a cigar-band of a band-severing device loosely interlinked with and entirely surrounding a portion of the band to be severed, normally lyingflat against the band and free to be raised therefrom, said link forming when raised a holding-loop extending from the junction of the device with the band.
2. In a cigar-band-severing device, a cigarband surrounding the cigar, a string loosely interlinked with and entirely surrounding a portion of the band, said string normally lying flat against the band and free to be raised therefrom, the two ends of the string forming when held together a holding-loop, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A cigar, a band surrounding the cigar, a string underneath the band having the ends thereof projecting beyond the edges of the band and secured together to form a loop normally lying flat against the band and free to be raised therefrom whereby upon raising and pulling on the string or loop the band will be severed without marring the wrapper of the cigar.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. DUNCAN, JR.
