v PATENTED 001271904; N; L. HAT-HORN.
PLOW SHIELD. APPLICATION FILED JULY 11, 7904.

Patented October 25, 1904. A
PATENT OFFICE.
PLOW-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,074, dated October 25,1904.
Application filed July 11, 1904.
4 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, NATHANI L L. HATHORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, inRapides parish and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow Shields; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap-. pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for plows; and the object of the invention is to produce a shield which may be easily and quickly applied to an ordinary plow upon the landside thereof to prevent wear of the latter; and it consists of a plate having a longitudinal flange which is bent to engage over the bottom of the landside and provided with an integral hook upon its upper edge for engagement over the upper edge of the horizontal portion of the landside, the forward end 'of said shield being beveled to a sharp curved edge. 7
The invention consists, further, in. various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically definedin the appended claim. I Y Y v Myinvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the lettersof reference marked thereon, form a part ofthis application, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary plow, showing my attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section view on line 22 of'Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the shield or attachment, and Fig. at is a perspective view of the shield.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a plowbeam provided with handles A and a plowstock-B with plow'B. I a
D designates my improvedshield or attachment, which may be of any suitable metal and of suflicient thickness to give strength and rigidity to the same, and a portion of the lower edge of said shield is bent upon itself, as at in case the landside of the the same, if desired,
Serial No. 216,085. (No model.)
-D, and is adapted to engage a portion ofthe bottom of the landside E, while the forward edge of said shield is beveled, as at a. An integral hookF projects from the shield near its forward end and from the upper edge thereof and is bent preferably in the shape illustrated in the drawings for the purpose of engaging over the upper horizontal edge of the landside of the plow, as illustrated inFig. 1 of the drawings. When the hook F is thus engaged, the bent portion B should engage the bottom of the landside in the manner shown, after which said shield may be fastened to the landside either by means of a bolt-H passing through the landside and the shield, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, 7
said bolt cooperating with a winged nut K, which bears against the wall of the shield for the purpose of clamping the latter tightly against the landside, or by means of a clamp plow is not perforated for the reception of a bolt. It will be observed that the shield has a slot N transversely formed therein and through which a bolt may pass, thus providing means for a slight adjustment of the shield.
By the provision of an attachment as shown and described it will be observed that a simple and eflicient device is provided for ready attachment to any ordinary plow for the purnewt" pose ofrendering a plow the landside of which has become weakened through usage or wear useful, as the attachment, securely held to the plow in the manner shown, will render the landside rigid and prevent the same from further wear, and the attachment may also be applied to new plows for'the purpose of preventing unnecessary wear.
While I have shown a particular detailed construction of. device illustrating my invention, it will be understood that I may vary as to details without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, Letters Patent, is
In combination with the landside of a plow, a shield having a portion of the lower edge thereof bent to form a flange which is designed to engage under the bottom of the landside l shield, and a winged nut for fastening the of the plow, the portion of the lower edge of shield to the plow, as set forth. 1 said shield intermediate said flange and the In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my forward upper edge being beveled, an intesignature in presence of two witnesses.
5 gral hook projecting from the upper edge of NATHANIEL L. llA'll'lOllN.
said shield and adapted to engage over a hori- \Vitnesses: zontal portion of the landside, and a bolt pass- A. L. l\'lILLER, ing through the landside and the slot in said JOHN R. HUNTER.
