Description
Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
SHOVEL FASTENING.
Application filed October 4, 1923.
To all who-nt 'it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonon IC. Bisi-rer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iuka, in the county of Tishomingo and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovel Fastenings, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shovel fastening, and has particular reference to improved means for effectively fastening or securing shovels of plows or cultivators upon the supporting standards or feet thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means for effectively fastening shovels upon their supporting standards or feet, whereby the possibility of the shovel slipping or moving from proper position is ettectively prevented.
It is well known that considerable difficulty is had in properly and rigidly securing the shovels of plows or cultivators to metallic standards or foot pieces, slippage of the shovels from their proper positions being often experienced unless considerable care and labor is taken in fitting and securing the shovels in place. It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide means whereby shovels may be attached to the supporting feet or standards of plows or cultivators, with facility and ease, and whereby the shovels are effective* ly held in position under all ordinary working conditions.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a shovel fastening which embraces the desired qualities of simplicity and durability of construction, and wherein the attachment of the shovel may be e'ected with ease and facility without the requirement of special tools.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed,
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view, partly in side elevation and partly in central longitudinal section, of a metallic foot or standard having a shovel attached thereto in accordance with the present invention.
Serial No. 666,562.
Figure 2 is a front elevational 'View of the device shown in Figure 1.
.Figure 3 is a rear elevational view of the front or standard shown in Figure 1.
Figure t is a perspective view of the device shown in Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the clamp member.
Referring more in detail to the drawings 5 indicates a metallic plow or cultivator standard or foot, the lower end of which is forwardly curved in the usual manner and provided with a longitudinal elongated slot In accordance with the present invention the standard 5 is provided with transverse corrugations or teeth 7 at opposite sides of the slot G for reception of transversely alined teeth 8 formed upon the plate member 9 of a clamp of the form shown in Figure 5. The plate member 9 of the clamp is provided with an opening as at 10 between the teeth 8 for recept-ion of a bolt 11 that passes through the upper central portion of the shovel 12 and through the slot 6, a nut 13 being threaded upon one end of the bolt 11 for effectively clamping the plate member 9 against the rear side of the standard and for clamping the shovel 12 firmly against the forward side of said standard, with the teeth 8 engaged in desired ones of the alined notches or 'teeth 7.
rIhe clamp n'iember further embodies a post let that is lrigid with the plate member 9 adjacent its upper edge and that is of such form as to project through the slot 6 above the bolt 11, and this post 14 is provided with a cross-bar 15 upon its forward end that has a depending lip to engage over the upper end of the shovel 12 as shown in Figure 1. rIhe cross-bar 15 is of such form as to pass through the slot 6 when the clamp is 'turned to position said cross-bar parallel with said slot, after which the clamp is given a quan ter turn so as to bring the cross-bar in position to extend transversely of the standard or foot 5 and engaging the upper edge portion of the shovel 12. The bolt 11 is 'then passed through the shovel and standard as well as through the opening 10 of the plate member 9, after which the nut 13 is' placed upon the bolt and tightened so as to engage thc teeth 8 in the notches 7, whereby a lateral shifting of the shovel. is effectively permitted and slipping of the shovel longitudinally of the standard is rendered iinpossible.
From the foregoing description it is believed that the Construction and operation as Well as the advantages of the invention will he readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
Minor changes nray he lnade Without departing from the spirit and scope of the in- 10 vention as claimed.
IVhat I claiin as new is Shovel attaching means Ytor plow or cul- In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE E. BISHOP.
