' Application filed March 22, 1904. emu No. 199,401. No model.)
To all whom it may concert).-
Be it known that I, WALTER M. Bn'rmmn, a citizen of the Ilnited States, residing at Talbotton, in the county of Talbot and State of Geor- 1 gia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Attachments for Guns;
1 and Id declare the following to be a fulLclea'r', and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings,
'. and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety attachments to guns to prevent accidental discharge of the same; and
the object of the invention is to produce means a .whereby a gun may be prevented from being fired excepting when pressure is applied to the stock'end thereof simultaneously with the ulling of the trigger.
My invention consists in various details of construction and in'combinations and arrange 'ments of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specificallydefinedin the appended claim; i v
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, fornia part of this application, and in whichf 4 Figure 1 is a side elevationof a gun, showing my improvementas applied thereto Fig 2is a vertical longitudinal section through a portion of the stock and locking mechanism,
and Fig. 3 is a sectional viewsh'owinga slight modification in the construction of my safety apparatus. .Q v 1 f Reference now being had to thedetails of the drawings by letter, A designates th Stock of a gun which is of the general construction of a well-known gun, and said stock is provided with the usualloick mechanism in breech loading guns, and B designatesa sear-releasing be which is pivoted to a link 0 upon a pin D, nd to said pivotal lever C my attachment isconnected, which comprises a rod E,"
having an eye E fitting over the upper portron of said pivotal link 0 and adapted to push purpose of retracting the bar B out of the the upper end of said lever forward for the path of thesear, wherebythe trigger may he pulled and the gun fired. Hinged to the stock end of the gun is-a shoulder-piece H, hinged at H. and a buckskin or other suitable cqver-,-
ing fabric (designated in the drawings by le't-. ter K) is placed'over the opening between said shoulder-piece and the stock. The rear end of said rod E has a bearing at H in a concavd recess in the inner face of the shoulder-piece H and passes through an aperture in the plate N, which is fastened tothe endof the stock, and a spring Q is mountedupcn said rod and bears against the shouldered portions thereof,
and the object of said spring is to norrrially hold. the shoulderpiece in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and to be under coin-- pression when the shoulder-piece is thrown toward the end of the stock.
Referring to Fig, 3 ofthe drawings, it will be seen that Ihave shown a slight modification of my made for detaching the rod from the sear-actuating lever, in'which the rod E is provided with two lugs E, projecting from the rod,
near one end thereof, and spaced apart, said.
apparatusin which provision is" lugs being adapted'to be thrown one on either side of the lever 0, whereby as the rod is ac- .tuatedlongitudinally said lever may he tilted upqn-its pivot, and when it is desired to disconnect the rod from the lever said rod mayj preee simultaneously with the pulling of the tr gger, which would usually happen only 'when'ii, gun is'raised to the shoulder of a perbe given a partial movement, so as to three?" the lugs away from the lever and allow the rod to move independent ofsaid lever.
son and in the act of being fired. As pres: sure is applied to thcfshoulder-piece the gun may be readily fired.
IVhile I have shown a particular construc what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A safety attachment for guns comprising, in combination with the stock, atrigger-releasing-mechanism bar, a pivotal lever connected to said bar, a reciprocable bar connected -to said lever for locking and releasing the trlgger, a rotatable spring pressed rod mounted in the stock of the gun, lugs projecting from said rod to engage either side of said lever, and a shoulder-piece bearing against said rod, as set forth.
v In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
WALTER M. BETHUNE. Witnesses:
