Description

. @uiten tat getraut Qffr'.,
JAMES H. BAKER, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 77,243, dated April 2s, 1868..
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOOR-GLAMPS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:.
Be it known that I, JAMES H. BAKER, yof Saratogay Springs, in the county of Saratoga, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Clamp or Jack for forcing tongued and grooved together, and other purposes; and do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. l
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, A represents a joist, upon which a floor is to be laid, and B represents an adjustable clasp or loop, provided with a series of -holes iu each side, so that it may be adjusted on a joist of any size by means of the pin K.
C represents a pronged or forked lever, provided withsuitable ears on one side,in which is pivoted a p'aWl, D.
One of the prongs of the leverC is provided with a pointed or conical-shaped hook or projection, and the other prong has a screw-hole through it, in which works a screw, j, whose inner end is also pointed. Said points catch in holes or recesses in the clasp B, and thereby attach the lever C thereto.
F and F represent an extension-arimvbothef the parts provided with ratohetfteeth, which lt and catch in each other, and one provided with a slot, in which works a screw-bolt or set-screw, and thereby may be adjusted at any length required. j i
This adjustable arm is pivot-ed to a suitable ear or projection between the forks of the lever C.
E represents an adjustable ratchet-bar, provided with projections, ra, on its under side, which may be drivon into a sleeper or joist wherever desired, and is a convenient and suitable catch for the pawl D.
By adjusting the clasp B to the joist A at'a suitable distance from'a floor-board to be laid, and then adjusting the ratchet-bar E opposite the arm F, and adjusting said arm so that it Will-rest against the floor-board, the operator may press said board as close or tight as may be desired by means of the lever C, and the same mayY be held thereby by means of the pawl D, which catches in the ratchet-bar E.
It will be readily seen that this device affords a simple and eonvenientmode of tightening and holding floor-beards while being laid.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desirepto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the'pivoted arm F and slotted extension-arm F, both having ratchet-teeth, and secured together by a set-screw, for forcing one board to another, or two or more boards of different widths, constructed to operate substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 24th day of January, 1868.
, JAMES H. BAKER.
