UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. METCALF, OF SISSON, CALIFORNIA.
HANDLE FOR HAND-STAMPS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 771,435, dated October 4, 1904.
Application filed December 18, 1903. Serial No. 185,692. (No model.)
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. METcALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sisson, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Hand-Stamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved handle for hand-stamps such as are used for canceling postage-stamps and for postmarking and dating mail-matter and other purposes for which a hand-stamp is used; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a handle for hand-stamps which is resilient and is adapted to relieve the hand of the operator from sudden jar and injurious concussion when the hand-stamp is used for canceling stamps or for marking purposes.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view of the handle for hand-stamps embodying my improvements.
In accordance with my invention the handle is composed of an inner section 1, which may be made of wood, metal, or other suitable material and to which the stamp 2 is aifixed, and a detachable outer or handle section 3, which is made of rubber or other suitable elastic resilient material.
The inelastic section 1 is provided at its shoulder 5 being formed around the base of said screw-stud. The resilient outer or handle section 3 is formed at its inner end with a screw-threaded socket 6, adapted to be screwed onto the screw-stud 4 to connect the said section 3 to the section 1, as shown. The inner end of the outer resilient handle-section 3, bears snugly against the shoulder 5 of the section I. Said outer resilient handle-section is preferably of approximately spherical or globular form, as here shown, to enable it to be readily grasped and retained in the hand of the operator, and it is provided near its inner end with an annular flange 7, which forms a rest for the little finger and enables the grip of the little finger to be readily retained on the said handle-section. By thus providing the handle of a stamp with a resilient outer portion to be grasped by the operator all injurious and unpleasant jar and concussion is taken up and neutralized by the said resilient section when the stamp is used.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hand-stamp handle comprising an inelastic inner section provided at its outer end with a screw-stud and a shoulder around the base of said screw-stud, and a resilient outer or handle section of approximately spherical form at one end, and having at the opposite end a screw-threaded socket engaged by the screw-stud, and an annular flange forming a finger-rest, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
