JAMES ROBINSON, OF FUNKVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM ROBINSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent, No. 77,100, dat'ed April 21, 1868; antdated April 9, 1868.
. IMPROVEMENTS in LAMP-OHIMNEYS.
fitig'e 5mm! ninth in in 113252 Enters haunt ant mating part at flge same TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES Romnson, of Funkville, in the county'of Venango, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimneys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a lamp-chimney constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the same. v
Figure 3 is a horizontal transverse section of the same, showing it as applied to a burner.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding-parts in all the figures.
1 -his invention consists in a lamp-chimney, having a notchformed in one side of the annular flanch, at the base thereof, with the material partially severed from-said flanch, raised up to form a lip at one side of said notch, so as to act as a stop against the chimney being turned too far, and-as a guide to enable the chimney to be readily removed from the burner when required. V v
To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
The chimney, made preforably'of glass, and of any suitable size and form, is marked A in-thc drawings, I
and the annular fianch, which projects outward from the base thereof, is represented at a. The said flauch has formed, in-one side or edge thereof, a notch or recess,',a, situated at one side of which, and formed upon the llan'ch a, is an upwardly-projecting spur or lip, b.- v
The top of the burner should be furnished with inwardly-projecting studs or cars, marked, respectively,
a* 6* 0*, for convenience 'of description,- and placed at diifereut parts of the periphery of the said top, as shown in fig. 3, and with a space between the said ears and the top-plate 0& the burner, corresponding to or slightly In attaching the chimney to the burner, one side ofthe flanc v studs or cars 6* 0?, with the notch or recess 0/ immediately over the remaining car, a, and such notched side of the ilanchbeingpressed downward, so'that the ear c* is caused to pass 'up through and be brought above the said notch, whereupon the chimney is turned around upon its vertical axis, so that the notch a is broughtawny from underneath the car a* into the position shown in fig. 3, and the flanch 0, being brought under and confined below the several cars a,* b* c, the chimney is effectually secured to the burner.
When it is desired'to detach the chimney, it is turned back until the lip b strikes the side of the car a*, and stopsthc turning of the chimney, when the notch a' thereof is brought underneath the ear a* which,
being done, the chimney is tilted so as to bring the notched side of the fianch a above the car just mentioned,
and the opposite sideof such flanchis then slipped from under the' other ears, 12* 0*, the lip thusser ving as a guide to facilitate the bringing of the notch a' under the spur if in such removal of the chimney. I This invention may not only be employed in the construction of chimneys proper,.but the so-callcd globes" for lamps and gas-burners may also be made on the same principle. for a correspondingpurpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The lip b, formed of the partially-severed material of the flanch c, in the formation of the notch or recess a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JAS- ROBINSON.
