Be it known that we, JAMES F. NEALL and WILLIAM MYERS, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in the Regulator for Furnace-Draugl1tg and-we do hereby declare tllatthe following is a full, clean-arid exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Our improvementjrelates to that class ofregulators which are operated by the pressure of steam for the purpose of regulating the draught of furnaces -by varying the positions of the dempers, or the areas of the airsupplying openings of the' furnaces, and has for its objects simplicity and economy of construction, and a diminution of friction, and therefore greater delicacy or sensitiveness in action;
v Our invention consists inthe construction and arrangement of a hollow steam-cylinder, packing-ring, and
piston', so as to operate together, for the purpose, upon a weighted lever, substantially as hereinafter described and specified,

The piston Ais ahollow'v cylinder, turned smooth on its exterior sides, closed at its outer and open at i'ts inner end, with the exception of-ahollow stem, a', which, opening through the centre of the. outer end of the said piston A, extends therefrom concentrically through the latter to some distance beyond its open inner end, say about half the length, more or less, of the said piston. The piston A is applied by forcing its open end through the packing-ring C, into the cylinder B, thus' Vturning the projecting inner edge of the packing G inward=or.downward, and causingit to bear around obliquelyl .against the smooth sides of the said piston. The friction of the packing is consequently less than it would be if caused to slide against the inside of` the cylinder B, and it is also much* easier to smooth the exterior sur face of the piston than the interior-surface of the cylinder.
` On the upper side of the case F there is a pair of uprightsf, (one only being shown,) 'having a knifeedge bearing, f, fixed thereto, so as to serve as the fulcrum of the lever E, whilst a notch, e', in the under side-of thelatter, serves as the power-point, and receives the knife-edge endof the vertical stem G, whereby the said lever is supported. A movable weight, H, is fitted so that :it can be-slid along on the lever E, and asafetyguard, I, prevents the lever from being accidentally thrown out of -its proper place,
The -whole apparatus is intended to be made of suitable metal.
Operation. The free end of the lever E being connected, bfy means of wire or jointed iron rods', to the hingedor sliding 'draught-door or damper of the furnace, the steam-pipe D connected to another communicating with the boiler, 'and the described regulator filled with water, as heretofore, steam is let on, andthe position oi'- the weight H then adjusted on the lever E, and fastened with a. set-screw, or otherwise, at such a point as will cause it to keep the piston at its mid-length in the packing-ring, when the desired strength of the draught, or position of the door or damper of the furnace has been ascertained; hence any variation inl the heat of the furnace will be immediately corrected by the ac'tonof the regulator upon the said draught-door or damper, because the movement of the piston A is entirely free from all friction except thntnecessarily arising from its close contact with the paclcingring C. l
Having thus fully described our improvement in the furnace damper regulator, what We claim' as new therein, of our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the piston A, cylinder B, pneking-ring C, and weighted lever E, substantially as described.
