Description

E. B. BEACH.
Improvement` in Steam Boiler Furnace Draft Regulators.
' Patented Feb. 13, 1872.
ATENT FFECE.
EDGAR B. BEACH, OF WEST.` MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
Speciiicaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,608, dated -February 13, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR B. BEACH, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Draught-Regulator; Vand I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes a part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure l a side view, and in Fig. 2 a vertical central section. .Y
This invention relates to an improvement in device for regulating the draught for furnaces bythe pressure of steam in the boiler; and it consists in the arrangement of a piston in a cylinder, provided with a valve which closes the cylinder at its lowest point, and the reverse side ofthe valve also closing the cylinder at the highest point, combined with a lever in connection with the damper, which opens the draught at the lowest point and closes it at the highest.
A is a cylinder, in direct connection with the boiler, so that the pressure within the boiler may actupon the piston B within the cylinder. The upper part of the cylinder is chambered out, as at a, the piston-rod C extending up through this chamber. 0n the piston a valve, d, is arranged so as to close the cylinder at the bottom of the said chamber, and prevent theescape of steam through the cylinder. The reverse side of the valve d (or may be any other similar valve) forms a valve to close the cylinder at the upper end of the chamber a, a valveseat,^b, being there arranged. Alever, D, having its fulcrum at E, and bearing upon the top of the said piston, is, at its other end, by means oi' a rod, F, or other device, connected directly to the damper or hre-regulator. This lever is provided with a weight, H, to govern the pressure which will be required to raise the piston. So soon as this pressure is attained, the piston is instantly raised to its highest point, closing the cylinder at the top so as to prevent the escapeof steam. This operation closes the draught until the pressure is reduced to or below the pressure upon the piston above, then the piston returns to its seat, thus opening the cylinder only for the instant that is required for the rising or falling of the piston 5 hence I am enabled to dispense with the da phragms usually employed, and produce a regulator small in extent and cheap in construction, but equally efficient as any heretofore produced.
I claim as my invention- The piston B, constructed with a valve, d, working in a chamber, a, to close the said cyl inder at either position of the piston, up or down, in combination with the weighted lever D and the connection F with the draught.
damper, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
