To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GORDON, of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Governors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to governors for regu-V lating the flow of gas from a supply-pipe to the burner; and it consists of the combination of devices hereinafter described, whereby the How and pressure of gas through the governor are regulated and controlled by means of a perforated valve receiving the pressure against its vertical sides, and by regulatingscrews, or by an automatic slide-valve device. , The shell of the governor consists of two hollow cups,'A and B, screwed together. at o c, each provided with mouths or ends a and b, which cups are screw-threadedat their respective ends to attach to the gas supply and exit pipes. rIhe lower cup, B, is provided internally withfahollow cylindrical extension-piece, C, which supports a flanged plate, D, having on its under side a hollow cylindrical extension, E, constituting thc valvechamber. This extension E rests within the cylindrical chamber C. The plate D has a central opening, which is made as a valveseat, and it is securely attached to the extension-piece E,which is perforated at o o to permit the passage of gas, and it is also screwed to the top of the cylindrical chamber C, and forms a gas-tight connection therewith.

In Fig. 3 is shown a modication of this part of the device, adapted to burners in which a vertical rod from the governor can be extended into the burner and be heated by the 9C flame therefrom. In this arrangement the regulating-screws can be omitted, and instead` thereof the plate D is cast with an extensionpiece, 2, so as to form a chamber, 3, and. the

It is apparent that the contraction and expansion of the rod 6 will cause the plate with its valved side to rise orfall, as the case maybe, and open or close the gas-ports 5. In normal position the ports are partly uncovered. The upper plate, F, is tted to the iianged side of the plate D to protect the disk and Valve, and prevent any dirt or water falling on them and impeding their action, and where a dry disk is used the plateF is perforated in one or more places to permit the escape of gas that may find its way above the disk'and exert a pressure thereon.
The operation is as follows: Gas from the supply-pipe enters the governor through the opening b, passing into the chamber O, within which is supported the cylindrical valvechamber E, then around the latter and th rough the perforations o o, strikes the vertical sides of the valve and presses against the lower face of the disk G, and out through the perforationss sin the plate D, and around the same upward to the eXitopening ato the burner or burnertube. When the pressure of gas is too great, the disk G will rise and bring the upper side of the valve against the central opening in the plate D, which opening is constructed to form a valve-seat, and thus more or less close the exit-passage for the gas, and this operation balances the valve by forcing a part of the gas to pass around the valve e downward and out through the perforations n. lThe pressure can be further regulated, as described, by means of the regulating-screws.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a governor for regulating the flow and pressure of gas to a burner, a valve with vertical perforations, in combination with an annular gas-chamber, and a disk to close the gasexit ports, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of an outer annular gastight chamber, an inner annular chamber provided with eXit-ports, a valve with vertical perforations and with a neck supporting a disk, and a guide-rod secured to the base of the inner chamber and serving to guide the valve and disk vertically, whereby the gasports to the supply-pipe of the burner are opened or closed in whole or in part by the greater or less pressure of gas within the inner annular chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the shell A B, provided with an annular extension forming a chamber, O, the flanged plate D, provided with gas-ports and a central opening, the inner central'chamber, E, provided with gas-ports and avertieal guiding-rod, and the valve e and disk G, moving upon said rod and serving by the action of the gas to open or close gas-exit ports in the plate D, substantially as set forth.
4. The perforated plate F, in combination with the flanged plate D, arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
5. In a gas-governor, one or more regulating-screws, in combination with the plate D, and operating to open or close,more or less, one or more gas-exit ports in said plate, as set forth.
6. In agasgovernor, the combination ofthe cap or plate F, havinga cylindrical extension, 4, and a rod extending into a gas-burner and to be affected by the heat therefrom, and the iianged plate D, having an extension-piece, 2, forming an annular ehamber,8, with said plate, whereby the gas-ports S and 5 are fully or partially opened to each other as the rod may be more or less expanded by the heat of the burner, said parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
