Description
W. H OOPER. GAS GOVERNOR.
(No Model.)
No. 556,465. Patented Mar. 17, 1896.
Q N J UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM HOOPER, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
GAS-GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,465, dated March 17, 1896.
Application filed February 11, 1895. Serial No. 537,931. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HOOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Governors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Th is invention has relation to improvements in gas-governors; and it consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts of which it is composed whereby the gas for illuminating purposes is regulated and controlled prior to its exit to the flame of the gas-burner, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my device detached from a gas-bracket. Fig. 2 is a side view of a gas-bracket having a gasburner with my device applied thereto. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of my device. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the disks detached from the governor. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the valve, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the key used in connection with my device.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the governor or gasregulator, the exterior upper portion, a, of which is provided with male screw-threads b, to which is screwed the common or ordinary gas-burner 0, while the lower portion, 01, of the governorA has female screw-threads 6, whereby the device is screwed to the outer end of a gas-bracket, chandelier or the like.
This governor is provided with an annular shoulder f, upon which is seated loosely a valve 9, having a perforation h through it, and above this shoulder is a second annular offset or shoulder i, on which is rigidly seated which register with perforations Z in a similar plate m, which rests upon the plate j and is held in position by the inwardly-turned annular flange n of the governor. This latter plate is designed to be turned and plays loosely between the flange and plate j sufficiently for this purpose and is turned by a key 0. (Shown in Fig. 6.) Thus it will be observed that the plate by means of the key can be revolved to partly or wholly close the perforations in the platej, and thus permitting the desired amount of gas to escape through the perforations in the two plates or shutting it off entirely. The valve g will automatically rise and fall by the pressure of the gas through the channel within the governor, thereby automatically regulating the pressure of the gas to the burner, closing or opening the outlets or perforations in the plate 3', thereby regulating the pressure of the gas to a nicety before it reaches the burner.
The governor can be seti. e., the plates j m so adjusted with reference to one an other-to pass the number of feet of gas necessary to supply any jet from a taper to a large flame.
The device is simple in construction and operation, durable, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gas-governor, the offsets or shoulders, arranged one above the other, the plates 7', m, seated upon the upper shoulder, the lower plate being fixed and the top plate adapted to be turned, whereby the openings in the two plates may be closed or partly opened, or entirely opened, for the passage of gas and the valve seated upon the lower shoulder and beneath the upper plates substantially as described.
2. In a gas-governor the combination of the shoulders 'i, f, plates m j and flange n substantially as described.
3. A gas-governor provided with twin perforated plates arranged within the channel or outlet for the gas, said perforations adapted to register with one another and the plates arranged snugly together, the upper plate being loose, for revolving and the lower plate fixed, and the loose plate held in position by the flange n and a perforated valve g adapted to play, between the plate j and shoulder f, by means of the pressure of the gas, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
YVILLIAM HOOPER.
