' H. A. KIMBALL.
HEAT GENERATING GAS BURNER.
No. 323,813.' Patented Aug. 4, 1885.
UN TED STATES PATENT OrFIcEe I-IIRAM A. KIMBALL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEAT-GENERATING GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,813, dated August 4,1885.
Application filed July 24, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM A. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphiaand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners for Consuming Gas to Generate Heat, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to burners for consuming gas to generate heat; and the improvement consists in the peculiar manner of constructing said burner, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Heretofore great difficultly has been experienced in mixing the gas with air in the proper porportions to insure complete combustion, and at the same time be able to produce burners of any desired heating capacity. These'difficulties are overcomeby myimproved burner, in which the air is forced out through a number of small holes arranged in a circle and completely surrounding an inner central outlet for the gas. On the outside of these air-outlets, and completely surrounding them, is another gas-outlet, so that the air passing out of the burner is enveloped on all sides by the gas, and a complete and thorough mixture of the two elements is thus accomplished. The flow of both air and gas being under separate control, the proper proportion of each is easily secured.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of the inner part of the burner containing the air-passages. Fig. 2 is a section of the same part on the line A B. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 0 D. Fig. 4 is a section of the whole burner on the line E F. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the small end of the burner. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the large end of the burner.
A A represent the outer casing of the burner, which is made in two parts and screwed together at a a. B is the air-inlet.
(N0 model.)
0 is the gas-inlet. b b the passages for the air through the burner; c c the gas-passages.
a a are the outlets for the air. a is the central gas-outlet. c is the gas-outlet around the outside of the air-outlets a a. p is an opening to convey the gas to the central outlet, 0. The outlets a. a are circular and generally made about one thirty-second of an inch in diameter, but'the size may be varied somewhat as the pressure is more or less. They are placed equidistant from each other and from both of the gas-outlets, the distance from each outlet being about one-sixteenth of an inch.
As gas is much lighter than the atmos- 6o phere and always under some pressure, to obtain the best results with my improved burner the air should also be forced through under pressure. 7
It will readily be seen that by the plan 6 5 herein described burners of any desired capacity may be made bysimply increasing the size of the diameter of the burner and increasing the number of air-outlets correspondingly, care being always taken to preserve the rela- 7o tive size of said outlets, and the distance between each and between the gas and air outlets.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
1. A gas-burner having the air-inlet B and passages 12 b, in combination with the gas-inlet O and gas-outlets c and c, all substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. A gas-burner having the central gas-outlets, c, surrounded by the air-outlets a, and the whole encircled by another gas-outlet, c, in combination with the gas-inlet O and airinlet B, all substantially as shown and de- 8 5 scribed.
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM A. KIMBALL.

in Letters Patent No. 323,813.?
Correction It hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 323,813, granted August 4, 1885, upon the application of Hiram A. Kimball of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for an improvement in Heat Generating Gas-Burners, an error appears requiring the following correction: Inline 51 of the printed specification the reference letter p should read (1, and that the Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein to make the same conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office. I
Signed, conntersigned, and sealed this 1st day of September, A. D. 1885.
[SEAL] G. A. JENKS,
Acting Secretary of the Interior.
Countersigned I M. V. MONTGOMERY,
Commissioner of Patents.
