UNITED STATES PATENT Utmost.
JOHN G. PAIGE, OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO GEORGE A. OSGOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
'DAMPER-REGULATOFL' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,270, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed June 1, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN C. PAIGE, of Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Damper-Regulators, of which the followingis aspecification.
This invention relates to appliances operated by variations of pressure in a steam-boiler to move a damper in a flue from the furnace which generates the steam to the chimney thereof, so that when the pressure rises above or falls below a given point the draft is checked or increased, as the case may be.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and compact apparatus of this class; and it consists in the several improvements which I will now proceed to describe.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front view of a boiler, its casing or setting, and a part of the chimney in connection with my improved regulator. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the regulator.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in allthe figures.
a represents a casing composed of two parts or sections bolted together and having a cham her or space, 1), between them which communicates through a pipe, 0, with the lower portion of the steam-boiler, the casing having a passage, 1), screw-threaded at its outer end, intowhich the pipe 0 is screwed. The chamber b is circular in horizontal section and contains a circular piston, e, which has a limited vertical play in the chamber. The periphery of the piston is separated from the surrounding surface of the chamber by an annular space into which is inserted'a packing ring or rings, f, of rubber, each ring being composed of a cylindrical piece of rubber, so that it serves both as a packing-ring and as an annular roller permitting the free vertical play of the piston.
On the upper side of the piston is a central boss, 6, which projects into a guiding-opening, g, in the top of the casing.
h represents a lever bearing upon a link, i, which is supported by the boss 6. Said lever is provided at one end with an aperture which (No model.)
receives a knife-edged stud, j, affixed to cars 7c on the casing, said stud constituting the fulcrum of the lever and being in close proximity to the link 15. The outer end of the lever h has an adj us able weight, m.
n rep resents a second lever fulcrumed at one end on a knifeedged stud, 0, attached to cars l p on the casing.
1' represents a link interposed between the levers h n, and supporting the lever a at a point near its fulcrum. The lever 12 has an adjustable weight, .9, and is extended asufiicient distance to enable it to give motion through a rod, t, to a crank, u, on the axis of a damper, o ,in the flue leading from the furnace or boilercasing to the chimney.
The operation is as follows: The pressure in the boiler is communicated through the pipe 0 to the piston e, and either raises said piston or allows it to be depressed by the weighted levers;accordingly as the pressure increases or diminishes. \Vhen the piston is raised, the outer ends of the levers h n are raised by it,and the lever a is caused to partially close the damper, thus checking the fire and preventing further increase of steam-pressure. IVhen-the piston falls, the damper is opened and the heat of the fireincreased. The rolling packingrings prevent the water or steam that actuates the piston from passing the piston, the rolling motion of the rings preventing them from bepiston.
It will be observed that the fulcrums of the levers h a are at opposite sides of the center of the casing, and that said levers projectin opposite directions, so that they counterbalance each other, and therefore have no tendency to tip the casing in either direction. This arrangement enables the casing and the entire apparatus to be made in compact form, and
its support.
I claim- 1. In a damper-regulator, the combination of the casing having the chamber or space Z), adapted to be connected with a steam-boiler, the piston adapted to more in said casing, the rolling packing ring or rings interposed being worn or chafed by the movementswj il e also enables the casing tobe easily secured to.
tween said piston and the surrounding surface roo of the chamber, and the dampenoperating devices supported by the piston, as set forth.
2. The combination of the casinghaving the chamber or space 1), adapted to be connected 5 with asteain-boiler, the piston in said chamber having a central boss projecting into an opening in the casing, the levers h n, fulcrumed at opposite sides of the center of the casing and extending in opposite directions across [0 the casing, as shown, whereby the apparatus is counterbalanced, and thclinksi 1', supporting the levers, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of 1 May, 1885.
JOHN C. PAIGE.
