STEAM DRAFT AND PRESSURE REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,864, dated April 14, 1885.

To all 1072,0121, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NOBLE J. WATERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Detroit, in the county of \Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam Draft and Pressure Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of draft and pressure regulators designed to be attached to any convenient support, and in which a valve adjustable at will is used to permit and control the passage of steam from asteam-generator,when the pressure rises above any designed tension, into a hollow piston operating a closed movable cylinder, which in turn operates a regulating draft-damper or a regulating throttle-valve; and it consists in the steam-valve bracket, herinafter described, and in the construction and arrangement of the various parts.
In the drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of my device; and Fig. 2 is a top view of the steam-valve bracket as shown in Fig. 1, with the cylinder and piston omitted and the lever and the weight added.

Y represents the wall of the building or any convenient support to which the bracket may be attached by suitable fastenings.
F F F represent a hollow bracket attached to the support at one end, and being fitted at the other end to receive a fixed hollow piston, B 13, containing a passage-way from the interior of said bracket to the interior of the cylinder A, movable thereon, and which may be connected, in any suitable manner, with a damper in a furnace or a valve in asteampipe, so that the movement of said cylinder on said piston shall operate to close a regu lating damper or valve in the usual manner in such machines.
The hollow bracket F F F is constructed with a diaphragm, T T, having the opening It, in which the valve S S is seated, closing the opening steam-tight. The valve S S is held in its seat by the pin M, passing through an ordinary stuffing-box out to the exterior of the bracket F F F, and automatically controlled by the lever XV, pivoted at P 0, carrying the adjustable weight V against the pressure of the steam passing through the (No model.)
pipes K H, which connect freely with that portion of the interior of the bracket marked E, pcrmittingthe steam to impinge upon the valve S S.
G is a drip-pipe, to which an ordinary stopcock is to be attached (not shown) to carry off, as desired, the condensed steam.
The operation of the device is as follows: Steam being permitted to enter the steam-pipe K H from a steam-generator, enters the chamber E- of the steam-valve bracket F F F, and impinges upon the face of the valve S S when the steam-pressure is greater than the adj usted weight or pressure upon said valve, graduated at will by means of the lever and adjustable weight V. The valve S S rises, permitting steam to flow into chamber D of said bracket, which rising through the conduit 1) b impinges against the head of the cylinder A, causing it to rise, and thereby operating the damper or valve with which it is connected. When the pressure falls below that at which the valve S S is set, it closes, and the cylinder A falls to its original position, reversing the operation of the attached damper or valve.
In the place of the lever NV and adjustable weight V, the pin M may be held down by a spring adjustable in the usual manner.
By the form and principle of construction of the steam-valve bracket and the arrangement of the parts in connection therewith I have described, I attain several useful results over that of any other device known or operated. I am enabled to'get the weight of the valve S S and its attached lever and weight very near the point of support, instead of at the end of the bracket and upon its attachments, as are heretofore shown and constructed, thus avoiding the disturbing effects of vibration thereon, which avoidance is especially valuable where the vibration of the adjoining parts is excessive, as in steam-vessels. My invention, therefore, permits the use of this regulating device in positions and in connection with steam-generators where all others would be useless. I am also enabled to use fewer parts. The arrangement is much simpler and more accesssible, with decreased cost of construction and operation. There is also less waste of steam, as the steam-spaces can be smaller.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In a steam draft and pressure regulator, the hollow bracket F F, provided with a pipe 5 to connect the same with the steam-generator, and connecting with the end of the hollow piston B B, carrying the actuatingcylinder A, the said hollow bracket containing an interior perforated diaphragm dividing it into two chambers, the valve S S, seated therein, controlled and operated substantially as described.
