BOOK-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,669, dated September 20, 1904.
Application filed February 1, 1904. Serial No. 191,472. (No model.)
T 0 all whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES NEELY BOSTICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Clamps, of which the following is a specification. v
The invention relates, more definitely stated, to novel means whereby loose leaves may be held and bound into book form by stapling or other securing means.
Specifically stated, the invention consists of a peculiar spring-acting clamp adapted to be secured upon the top of a table or other support and means for working it, all as will hereinafter be fully described and the novel features pointed out in the claims.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention in use. Fig. 2 isan enlarged detail perspective view of the clamping-jaws,
and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of my invention.
In the practice of my invention I employ a clamp A, constructed of a plate bent upon itself at A, forming an upper jaw B and a lower jaw C. The plate may be formed of any material adapted to place the jaw B under tension, holding it normally elevated.
D denotes a rod or other device extending from the jaw B down through openings in the jaw C and the clamp-support E, which latter is shown in the form of an ordinary table. The lower end of the rod. is suitably connected with a treadle or lever F, which may be located on the floor and its upper end provided with a head Gr above the jaw B.
It will be noticed that the jaw C has a series of standing pins or fingers H suitably spaced for receiving between them extensions I on the jaw B. The extensions are provided with notches or recesses J for the purpose as will appear farther on.
In using my invention a batch or desired number of loose leaves are arranged in order, as indicated at K, and placed against the fingers H, as shown in Fig. 1. Now through the rod D simple pressure on the treadle F will draw down the jaw B to clamping action of its extensions I upon the batch of leaves, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Upon necessary pressure being applied to the treadle for holding the leaves securely clamped an awl or punch L, held by one hand of the operator, may be forced through all the leaves and withdrawn without disarrangement thereof. In the holes thus formed through the batch of leaves suitable binding -staples may be arranged and clenched, as will be understood. In punching the holes through a batch of leaves the notches J serve as gages for placing of the awl to insure that the holes be properly spaced and punched adapted for receiving the securing-staples.
If desired, the clamp may be secured to its support by screws or other means arranged in openings M.
Obviously the clamp above described may be modified by forming it of jaws hinged together at N and the upper jaw made yielding through means of an interposed spring 0, substantially as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hereinbefore-described book-clamp, consisting of yielding clamping-jaws, one elevated above the other, means extending from the upper jaw to an operating-lever, standing fingers at the forward end of the lower jaw, and extensions at the forward end of the upper jaw, substantially as described.
2. A book-clamp, consisting of yielding clamping-jaws, one located above the other, a suitably-supported treadle, means connecting the upper jaw and the treadle, standing fingers at the forward end of the lower jaw, extensions at the forward end of said upper jaw having spaced recesses, the standing fingers being spaced apart adapted to receive said extensions between them, upon clamping action of the jaws, substantially as described.
