Description
UNITED STA-TES Patented September 6 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD W. DOYLE, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
PUFF-(MB.
SPECIFIGA'LION forining part of Letters Patent N0. 769,151, dated'September 6, 1904. l V
' A.pplication filed June 21, 1904. Serial N0. 213,496. (N0 model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNRD W. D0YLE, of
Leominster, in the county of Worcester anal State of Massachu'setts, have invented a certain new and useful Pompadour Double-Pulf Cornb; ancl I d0 hereby declare tl1at tl1e following is a full elear, ancl exaet cleseripion of the sanne.
This invention relates 130 toilet articles, ancl particularly so a comb designed for use in forming a pompadour by supporting tl1e hair in a curvecl position 0ut of engagemenn with the head.
An object of this invention is to proviole a combined comb ancl hair-supporting device .Which Will produce two disbinct waves, one
preferably of lese height than the other, though in this regard limitation is unnece'zssary. v
Furthefmore, an object of tl1is invention is so produce a combinecl comb and hair-supporting clevice in which the supporting mernleer is approximately coneentric witl1 tl1e .combancl in wh ich tl1e supporting member has anchoring rneans whiel1 hold the supporting member withnnusual rigidity.
Finally, an ob ect. of this invention is to provide a combined comb and hair-supporting clevice which Will prove strong ancl durable, effieien and satisfactory in use, and comparatively ine'xpensive.
With tl1e foregoing and' otl1er objects in view filme invention consists in the details of construction ancl in the arrangement ancl combination of pars.to bel1ereinafter more fnlly set fortl1 and specifieally elairned.
In describing -the invention in detail referernboclying. a modified construction o1 the inven tion. Fig. 3 illustrates a still further modification.
In Ehe drawings, A .denotes 13l18 comb, which may be of the o rdinary curvecl type '00 par-.
tially embrace the heacl of a wearer with the smaller supporting member O. The saicl S1 tions of tl1e strip between the curved portions form a foot D, Wl1ich is anchored 110 tl1e comb A. The ends of' tl1e strips are bent 130 form feet E, which are als'o anchored t o tl1e comb, ancl it Will be observed that the supporting rnembers are preferably directly above tl1e comb When the said comb is in operative position in order tha1; t-l1e weigl1t of tl1e hair ancl tl1e strain incident so the use of the supporting-olevice may be directecl in a straight line rather than to produce lateral strain.
The supporting inemloers B and C are transversely convex, ancl the two edges of eacl1 member are 011 approximately the same plane a any cross-section, or, in other words, the
It is my purpose to proficle aseries of transversely-disposed slots F and F in the tvvo s1ipporting mernbers, which Slots receive tl1e l1air of tl1e wearer ancl prevent displacemenb of the mass 01 hair when it is once engaged by the supporting members.' 'Ihe depression between the secuions B and C and th e point of anchorage Dalso afforcls arneans f01 holding the hair in position to prevent displacement of the comb and 0f' the hair. serveol that the enol slots 0f each series F and F are slightly larger than the remaining slots, and this is advantageous, Eo]? Ehe reason tl1at a greater mass of hair can be lodged therein and forma a base for tl1at portion which follows the contour ofthesaid support.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 a comb A is provided, having supporting mennbers B and C; the members in this instance cornpris- It Will be ob ing longitudinally-disposed strips a and flle outer sbrips a being plain and the intermediate Strip b being corrugated in oraler t0 form ports B and C are duplicated, exeept that the member indicated by B is higher and longer t0 accornplish thefunctions illustrated and described in connection with ehe disclosure in Fig. 1.
In Ehe mo'dification shown in Fig. 3 a gomb A is provided sirnilar 130 the cornb heretofore described, and the supports B and C are forrned 0f outer strips a, of corrugated material, and a central strip b, which is plain. The form shown in Fig. 2 is provided With the f0013 D, and the fornn shovvn in Fig. 3 is provided Wi1:h a foon D Which corresponds 130 the foot D in Fig. 1 and is provided for the Same purpose. In fach, the devices shown in Figs. 2 and 3 eure f01 the sarne purpose as the device shown in Fig. l, excep tha modificaions are made in nhe manner of manufacturing the supporting members.
In view of the foregoing it Will be obvious that this suppor may be variously modified both in the proportions and details 0f constructions. Therefore the scope 0f the invention should not be li1nited t0 the exact 1011ns illustrated.
Having fully described 1ny invention, what I clai1n as new, anddesire Eo secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination, a comb, a supporting momber bent to f0rm a plurality of sections o1 unequal length and height, 13110 said membor being anchored t the connb intermediate ius sections, feet 011 the ends of the member anchored t0 the cornb, and hair-engaging means carried by ohe supporting member, said mcans being directly above the conb when said co1nb is in operative position.
