Letters Patent, No. 76,910,- dated April 21, 18.68.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOILERS.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Beit known thatwe, CHAUNGEY O. GREENE and ROBERT HAM, cachot the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water- Reservoir Stoves and Ranges; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, and makingpa 'part of Vthis specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and showing the water-reservoir as in its hack or realposition on the stove-top.
Figure 2 is a perspective view, and showing the water-reservoir as turned around to its front position, and over the pot-holes on the stove-top.
Figure 3 is a view of the bottom side of the water-reservoir, showing a frictiondlange thereon` Figure 4 is atop or plan view of a water-reservoir stove, and showing diiierent positions that the waterreservoirrmay be shifted into, and made to rest in at diEerent times on the stove-top; and
Figure 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of tig. 4.
The same letters refer to like parts in each of the s aid figures.
The object of our said invention is to produce a water-reservoir stove or range, whereof the water-reservoir may be conveniently and readily changed or shifted around from the cooler to the hotter places, and reversed upon the stove or range-top, and be so operated or moved to that end, without necessity -for dctachingor lifting said reservoir from the stove or range-top, when'so changing its places thereon, for the purpose ofregulating the temperature of water within said reservoir to any heat desired, from warm-to that of boiling heat; andthe nature or distinguishing features ofthe said invention consist in the water-reservoir of the stove or range being so pivoted or hinged thereto, that the said water-reservoir is' made capable of,and it may, without lifting it or detaching it from the stove or range-top, be turned, revolved, or shifted around, or part way around, horizontally, or nearly so, about its pivot-centre thereon, and thereby made to rest upon or over various differentlyheated parts of the stove or range-top, atdiiierent tintes, substantially in manner asgher'einafter fully described and sho'wn,'so that the temperature of water within said reservoir may thereby be regulated from a warm to a boiling heat, as wanted for various culinarind other uses.
The said invention also consists in the construction and combination oftcertain mechanical devices, substantially as hereinafter fully described and shown, with stove or range-tops and their water-reservoirs, whereby the water-reservoir thereof is 'secured thereto in such manner as to be easily shifted or moved on and-about its.
pivot-centre, from one position or place to another-position or place on said range or stove-top, for the purpose aforesaid, l l
To enable others skilled in the art to make anduse our said invention and improvements,- We will now pro oecd to fully describe its construction and operation, to wit: n l l In iig. 1, of the annexed drawings, B shows a shifting or turning hot-water eservoirpprovided with hinged lids or covers, and mounted' upon and hinged or pivoted to the top-plate A of a cooking-stove or range, Ofcom struction, in manner, and by devices substantially as follows: In the front side of the water-reservoir B, a recess, Q, extending through or from top to bottorn is made or cast therein, and the bottom part or edge ofthis recess is extended at right angles, or nearly so, to said recess, and inward, 'so as to form a flange or shoulder, e, con; centric with said recess, and fastened by rivets, or otherwise secured to and over, so as to enclose and form the front partei' wall of said recess, is un arched plate, D, which has formed on and at its bottom 'inside'face, a section of flange-or shoulder, which makes even jointwith the flange e aforesaid, andserves to make' complete therewith an annular orcontinuous'ring-Hangs, e, atthe bottom of said recess-G, and said flange has made in its back Yor rear part, a notch, lv. Thel construction and arrangement oi the aforesaid devices is fully shown in gs. 3, 4, and 5, of annexed drawings. There is formed on or attached to the front of the pipe-collar h.of the exit-passage C, a holding-lug, a, projecting laterally orv horizontally therefrom, and arranged suiiiciently up fromV the surface of stove-tcp A to allow the aforesaid ring-Hangs 4e to move freely under said lug a, when adjusted in combination there Aith and thereunder. i
Formed on or attached to the under side or. bottom of said water-reservoir B, is an anti-friction flange or flanges or ribs, g, or suitable equivalent devices therefor, such as friction-wheels or rollers; or the said :intifriction devices may be attached to the stove or range-top A, instead, and effect their purpose, but we prefer them on the-bottom of the reservoir, substantially as shown in iig. 3, and arranged thereon concentricnlly, as
shown. v
This Water-reservoir B, as thus constructed, is now mounted upon the-stove or'range-top A, as prepared for it, and secured thereon, to operate in combina-tion" therewith, by placing it thereon, with its rear or back side square to the front of the stove or range-top, in manner as shown'in fig. 2 of annexed drawings, atwhich position the lug a and thenotch b aforesaid are made to coincide, so that the said notch passes the said ringlange into the proper position for it to more under the lug a., when'turning'the said reservoir about horizontally in right or in left directions, torshift or change the saine about its thus-.formed pivotcentre, into different places on the stove-top, within its circle of movement thereon. When the said reservoir is shifted or turned into the position to cover partly the pot orv boiler-holes E E, as shown .in fig. 2, the lids or covers thereof, and centrepiece F, may he removed, if desired, and a removable coveror hood, I, placed thereon, and joining the reservoir i side, andalso so as to enclose under it a part of thereservoirs side, and so increaseits direct heating-surface.
The said iig. 2 shows fully only Abut a part of said' cover I, the rest being shown by dotted lincs,rt,o thereby better show the openingjclosed by said covering-plate. The pipe C, for the exit of the gases of' eo1nbust`ion,is placed in the usual manner over thepipe-collar, and is or muy be held up'thereon by the' lug a, or on saidlug and a shoulder-support, the collar bei'ng'made somewhat higher than is customary, so as to serve also asa pivotcentreas aforesaid, for `the water-reservoir B, which shifts or turns theeabout, without support of or contact with said exit-pipe.
This new improved water-reservoir stove or range is managed or operated .to effect its purposo'of heating water therein to any intermediate temperature, from warm up to a b'oiling heat, inclusive, in manner as follows: f
For warm water only, change or shift the-ivaterreservoir B, by turning it about its pivot-centre, intol its least hot place, as in rear f the exit-pipe C, and on the back end vbf the stove or range-top, in manner as shown in iig. 1. When water still warmer is wanted, but not of a boiling heat, again shift the said reservoir, by turning it into position lengthwise with the stove-top or side, in manner as shown by the black linesin figs. 4 and 5.; and when boiling-hot-water is wanted,'the said reservoir is then to be shifted or turned on and over the hottest place for it on the said top, and in position as shown in iig. 2, in which position the water therein, is made boiling hot. The blue and red lines in said g'. 4 show other and some of the intermediate positions on the stove or rangetop, into which the said water-reservoir B may be shifted or changed, byturning it about its pivot-centre, l
in manner as aforesaid.
i The said water-reservoir, inits shifting or changing movementsY from one position to another on and about the stove or range-top, moves at all times easily, and with 'little' friction thereon, and on and about its pivot; centre, because the aforesaid friction-iange or flanges on the reservoir-bottom presentbutsmall 'surface of contactwith and on the stove or range-top, and witbthe leverage obtained by applying the moving force atlthe end orends of the waterreservoirhand when the stoveor range-top is occasionally blacked over with plumbngo of black lead," so overcomes and lcssens friction, that the said awater-reservoir or tank is moved easily thereabout, when brimful of water.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by yLetters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a cooking-'stove or range, we claim a water-reservoir or boiler, B, when hinged or pivotedto or upon said stoy-cor rangetop, in manner such that the said water-reservoir or boiler fmay be turned, revo1ved,'or shifted thereon about its pivot-centre, andthereby be made to rest upon or over the differentlyheated parts of said stove or range-top, to thereby increase or decrease, or regulate the temperature of water within said reservoir or boiler, substantially in manner as hereinbefore described' and shown for the aforesaid purpose.
V2. In Vcombination with a cooking-stove or range, we claim lthe arrangementlo't the exit-passage or ue thereof, for the .gases of combustion, and the said pivoted, turning, or shifting water-reservoir, both at one and the same end of said stove or range,'in manner substantially as described, so that the escaping 'gases of combastion thereout shallsimpart heat to said water-re'servoir,in anyone' of its shifted positions on and over the stove or range-top, as .set forth.
3. We claim` a cooking-stove or range, having' a top-plate provided with pot-holes, E, and a water-reservoir, B, so mounted and pivoted lthereon that it can vbe turned or shifted horizontally about its pivot-centre, as
described, and placed over or partly'over the said pot-holes, so as to receivethc greatest heat from the stove or range, and alsobe turned oft' horizontally, to -leave thesaid'potholes-esposed oropen and free, to place culinary vessels therein, as set forth. v
4. -Ws claim, in combination with-.a stove or range-top, pot-holes Ey and a water-reservoir,turning or shifting about its pivot-centre thereon, as described, a loose and removable cover-plate or hood, I,V substantially as and for. the purpose set forth:
5. We claim the manner of securing said pivoted and shifting reservoir to the stove or range-top, by means of the collar h, with lug a, and flange-ring e, with notch "b, or any equivalent devices therefor, which shall holdl the .said reservoir upon the stove or range-top, so that it lmay turn' about its pivot-centre, as described, and keep it securely thereon, in any one of its shifted positions on and about its pivot-centre, as set forth..
6. We claim, in combination with a. stove or range, and a water-reservoir moving or shifting aboutits piwr'otcentre thereon, as described, a. frcltion-ange o r nges, g, or any equ'valent' devices therefor, formed on yor attached to the reservoir-bottom, or to the'stove or range-top, as and for the purpose set forth.
