IMPROVEMENT 1N GAS-COOKING APPARATUS.

TO ALL WHOMV ,IT'MAY CONCERN:
vBe it knownthat I, DAVID GREENE HASKINS, of Cambridge, in the county of-Middlesex, and State of h'lassaciiusetts, have invented a` new and improved Gras-Cooking Apparatus, of which Athe following is affull, clear, "and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved apparatus, showing the inside. Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same. VFigures 3,4, 5, and 6 are details of devices employed in the apparatus.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, economical, and efficient apparatus for cooking purposes,
in which the iiame of gas, or that produced from any of the oils or burning-iiuids, is employed as fuel, in such a manner that the cooking, etc., shall be effected by radiation instead of the direct action of the heat from such a ilame, asin the gas-cooking apparatus in general use; and the invention consists of a case or box, 0f any desired shape or size, formed of two 4plates or sheets-of metal on all its sides except the front, with a space between such plates throughwhich the products of combustion pass from the lame to the chimney or 4flue, which space, on the .under side, is lillcd, more or less compactly, with layers of wire netting, as used in my other patented heating apparatus, and for the purposes ot' detaining and radiating the heat.
I'n gas-cooking stoves in common use, as far as I ,am aware, the cooking is produced by heat arising from VAthe direct action ofthe iiame upon the articles to be cooked, or upon the utensils in which the same are cooked,
and then the products koff-combustion from the gas, together with the fumes arising from the articles cooked, arc allowed to escape into the roofm or apartment in which the4 cooking'is being done.
In my appara-tus the cooking is eiiected by the radiation of the heat from the action of the dame and products of combustion on thediaphragm and inner casing, the said llame and products of combustion not being;
allowed to enter the apartment of the apparatus in which the articles to be cooked are placed, but, after imparting their heat, are passed offto the chimney, together with the smoke and fumes from the cooking viands.
Referring tothe drawings, fig. 1 represents a perspectivevicw of my apparatus, with the doors open. It A is construct-cd of a dou-ble casing, a c, of sheet metal on all its sides, as well as at top and bottom, with a space between the two casings, as shown in section'in g. 2. In the bottom ofthe inner casing is an opening for the reception -ot a kettle, Je, or any other culinary article for boiling or cooking purposes. When it is desired to close the said opening a cover, c, as shown in figs. 3' and-4, is employed, so asA to preserve an even surface on the bottom of the apparatus. The said cover c is provided with a diaphragm or secondary plate, e', attached to its under side by a central pin, or by pins arranged nearer the edgesof the same, which serves to absorb and diiuse the heat derived from the lame'of the burner below., On the under part of thc'apparatus is a cylnder, b, open at its lower end, and attached to the outer casing at its upper endpas shown in 1i". 2. This cylinder communicates only with the space between the two lcasingsoi` the apparatus, so that the heat, or products ofv combustion from the flame of the gas, etc., will pass oft` from the cylinder I, through the space around the sides and top oi' the apparatus, tothe fluef leading to the chimney.
The space at the rear of the apparatus is separated from that at the sides by a diaphragm or partition, so arranged that the products of combustion will pass up through the space on each sideof the apparatus, over the top of the same, and down the rear space to the luef, as shown by the arrows, by which means the entire inner compartment will be heated. Ledges s are fixed to the sides of the inner compartment, to support shelves,
upon which articles to be cooked are placed.
Hl, gs. 5 and 6, represents a form of broiler or gridiron to be used with my apparatus. It is formed with metal rods attached to the upper edges of a pan, so-as to iit in thc opening in the inner compartment. L is a valve or cover, placed over an opening in the rear of the inner casing, to permit the escape of steam or fumes arising from the articles being cooked. A similar opening and cover are arranged in the top ofthe inner com part1nent,l"or the same purpose. k is a cover, placed on an opening in the top of the outer casing, which cover may be removed, and a kettle, dish, or other article may be placed in the opening, for the purpose of heating the sumo. 'lhcre may also bc a double hearth attached to this stove, with holes provided with covers, for
' placing pots or kcttles, with separate burners under them, the products of combustion passing between the two surfaces ofthe hearth to the space around the oven, or directly into the smoke pipe. -In the space between the two casings may be placed wiregaze', or other` heat-radiating material, as provided for in a patent granted to me onApril 10, 1866, and numbered 53,820.
My apparatus may be very cheaply constructed. The two casings may be made of diierent sorts of metal, L
the innercasing to be of some heat-conducting material, and the outer of a. non-conducting material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A gas-cooking apparatus, formed with the double casing a c, filled, as described, with wire nettingin combination with the combustion-chamber b and exit-Huey", the inner easing being provided with a hole,'for the reception of a kettle or other culinary vessel, and with openings and covers h, for the escape of steam, ctc.,
substantially as specified.
2. I claim the combination of the metal plate or cover e, provided with the diaphragm elwth the perforated inner easing c and the combustion-chamber b, a's set forth.
In testimony WhereofI have signed my name to this spcication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
