Description

@einen tste @stent-@frn LEMUEL S. FITHIAN, OF EAST NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR. TO IIIMSELRJAMES M. HOP- KINS, AND JEFFERSON W. SOUTHMAYD, OF NEW YORK CITY.
Letters Patent No. 76,902, dated April 21, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVISE FOB. MULTIPLYING MOTION 0N A SINGLE SHAFT'.

TO ALL WHOM- IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit known that I, LEMUEL S. FITIIIAN, of East New York, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and improved Mode of Multiplying Revolutions or Motion on a Single Shaft without the usual loss of leverage; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and enact description thereoreference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of' my invention consists in the shaft S S supported on B B; the wheel or disk A, cogged on the'side and fast on shaft S S; the wheel or disk C, cogged ou both sides, as shown on drawings, and revolving on shaft S S; the wheel orlever A', containing slot for communicating-wheel a and fast on shaft S S; the wheels or disks D, E, F, 52e., each carrying slotted lugs for communicating-wheels d, e, Sie., and revolving on shaft SS; the lever Bor extension ofthe support D, having slot for communicating-wheel b.
'Io enable others skilled' in thel art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation'. Y
The different parts being constructed as'aboveVand arranged upon shaft, as shown in the cross-section view, the revolution of the wheel or disk A willact upon the wheel b, and thence on wheel or disk C, giving the latter a corresponding 'motion in the reverse or opposite direction and A being fast on shaft S S, will at the same time revolve the shaft and A with it, and by means of the vcommnnicating-wheol a will take motionV from disk or wheel C, Aand pass the motion to wheel or disk D, which carries its lug and communicating-wheel d, which also acts on wheel or disk G, taking motion from C and passing it to wheel or disk E, which carries its lug and communicating-wheel e, which also takes motion from wheel or disk C, and'passcs i't to F, 'and so on indefinitely as you add wheels or disks.
The motion will be, D, three, E, seven, F, fifteen revolutions in the 'same time in which the wheel or disk A makes one. But I do not intend to confine myself to this alone, for we may multiply the reverse motion by means of multiplying-wheels in slot B, and the inertia motion hy means of multiplying-wheels in slots A', D, E, F, die. Also in place of wheel or disk O, we may use an increasing series of bcvel-cogs, or'the-section efe' sphere, with a series of cogs upon it, or a cylinder or shaft cogged upon .the outer side, with corresponding shaped levers and disks, taking motion from the bevels, spheres, or cylinder o1' shaft, and continue the same motion, or increasing leverage and decreasing motion as we communicate with communicating-wheels horizontal to the shaft, or with an increasing angle up to the vertical, and thus passingr on to a longerlever instead ot' a shorter.
What I claim as my invention, and'desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is?- 1. The stationary lever D, having slot and communicating-wheel 6, the wheel or disk A, and lever o r wheel A', carrying slot and communicating-wheel a, and fast upon the shaft S S, the reverse revolving wheel or disk C, the revolving wheels-or disks D, E, F, ke., carrying slotted lugs, and the communicating-wheels horizontal to the shaft.
2. The stationary lever or slot Il, and communicating horizontal wheel b. I
3. The combination of the wheel or disk A, and the slotted lever A with communicating-wheel d.
4. The reverse revolving wheel or disk' C geared differentially.
5. The revolving wheels or disks D E F, and slotted lugs carrying wheels d e, arranged horizontal to the shaft LEMUEL S. FITI-IIAN.
