Lentement No. 76,899, @adapta 21, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE POR IORMING FIFTH-WHEEL.
tlgt .ttthtlr maar la tu there Etains haben mit mating artt at its tame.,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY' GONOERN:
Be it known that I, Gnonen Fnronrnnn, of Wooster, in the county of Wayne,'and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Formers for `Fifth-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description thereocreference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part oi`.this specication, in which* Figure l represents a plan, and
Figure 2 a side elevation of my invention, and
Figure 3 aside elevation ofthe wrench.`
The object of my invention. is the construction cfa machine for forming-thc fifth wheel for wheel-vehicles, in the manner hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and employ my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation.
.A represents a circular metal platform, placed in a horizontal position, with a projectionQe, the object of which will be hereafter described. In the centre of A is averticalpost, B, say six inches in diameter." C designates a small circular platform, raised suciently high above platform A to correspond with the iron which is to bo bent. The post B occupies the centre of said` platform C. D D represent two ringsfatl suitable distances apart, the inner ring being separated at a proper distance from the periphery of the outer ring D. E represents a cam-lever, having at its fulcrum a bolt that passes-through a'slot in e. The said bolt is adjustable in the slot by means of a nut at one end. By this arrangement, the lever E can be moved in the direction of the centre of platform A, or further from the centre, as the case may require. F- represents an adjustable horizontal slotted brace, which works near the top of post B. i G G designate two vertical screws, one of which works in each of the slots in brace F. Each of screws G is furnished with a nut, L, the said nuts each havingl two wings, which are made slightly convex at their upper surface. On these wings the brace F will rest whenthe screws G are in position.' I represents the cranks, attached to the opposite ends "of screws G G, for opernting them. H represents a wrench, the design of which is to form the wheel. as hereaftery described. The rings D D, it will be remarked, are adjustable.
As there will necessarily be a pressure on rings D D while bending a fifth-wheel, they will be strengthened on their inner side by other rings of about half their elevation.
In operating my machine, the iron to be bentwill be heated 'to a white heat, then fastened at its end edgewise, 'by means of lever E, and also griped and held down by a pair of blacksmiths tongs, and while thus held, the wrench H will be used to form the wheel, the inner jaw or prong of said wrench being made to rest against the side of thc inner ring, D,`and the outer jaw against the iron,sc as to press it against the outer ring at every point, until the iron is reduced to its proper shape, or, in other words, until the fth-whecl is completed. The screws G G will bensed to hold the bent part of the iron in position until the wheel is completely formed.
Having thus described my invention, what I c laini as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-f 1. The removable rings D D, in combination-with the platform A and adjustabldcam-lever'E, substantially 'as and forthe purpose set forth. 1
In combination with the above, I 'claim the slotted brace F and screws G Gr, when 'used as set forth, for the purpose of retaining the fifth-wheel in place-while undergoing its formation.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I ax my signature 'in presence of two witnesses. GEORGE FEIGHTNER. Witnesses:
HENRY LEAMAN, A. E. LnnMAN.
