Description

sa@ 0 @met l @tf1 EDMUND R. CARTER, OF MEDINA, AND CORODO OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 89,631, dated May 4, 1869.
To whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, EDMUND R. CARTER of Medina, in the county of Lenawee, and CORODON D. W. GLB- soN, of Bay City, in the county of Bay, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Upsetting Iron; and we do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom view ofthe same.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in machines for upsetting bars of metal, such as wagon-tires, and consists in the construction of a pair of gripping-jaws connected to a double lever, and which are moved to or from each other by the Operation of said lever; also in the new, novel, and peculiar arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter more fully shown and set forth.
A, in the drawings, represents the bed-plate of our device, provided with the longitudinal slOts'B, g. 2.
C are jaws, sliding on the bed-plate, and provided with lugs D, which project down through the slotsl B, and which serve to guide the jaws in their movement. E are slots on the inner ends Of the jaws which embrace the ribs F, on the top of the bed-plate, for a similar purpose.
G is a lever, vibrating on a pivot H, on the under side of the bed-plate at its centre, and has pivoted to l pivot H, the links I, which are pivoted to the lugs D, thereby causing the jaws to move towards or from each other, as may be desired.
J are serrated eccentrics, pivot'ed to thejaws in such a manner that when the jaws are caused to approach each other, they will force the bar of metal which is being upset, against the serrated rack K, opposite them on the flanges L,fof the jaws, and securely hold it while being upset. v The apparatus being small and compact, may be securely bolted tO the vise-bench, or may be mounted upon a frame, as circumstances require.
What we claim as our invention, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved upsetting-machine, plate A, provided with slots B, ribsvF, and pivot H. The sliding jaws C, provided with lugs D, serrated eccentrics J, flanges L, serrated racks K, slots E, links I, and the lever G, when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein specied, and for the purpose set forth.
