Be it known that I, FRANK C. H. STRASBUR- GER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filling-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for filling bottles and the like; and its object is primarily to provide for quickly and easily adjusting the machines for bottles of different heights.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown one embodiment of the invention, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view showing a bot thug-machine containing my present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the adjusting devices.
I will first describe in general terms the construction of the machine which has been selected for the purpose of illustrating and explaining the present invention, and, referring to the drawings, 4 is a base of suitable character, and 5 is a driving-shaft which car' ries a pulley 6 to receive a driving-belt and a worm 7, meshing with the worm-gear 8 on the upright driven shaft 9. The bottle-rests 10 are carried on stems 11, which are guided in the guides 12 and operated by the cranklevers 13, which travel against the fixed cam 14. The supply-tank 15 is mounted on the upright shaft and is provided with an inletpipe 16 and a float 17, which is adapted to control the supply of liquid entering the tank by mechanism of some suitable character. The tank is provided in its bottom with a filling mechanism 18 of suitable character and which may comprise a filling-tube l9, and it is not considered necessary to describe in detail the float-valve mechanism or the filling mechanism, for they form no part of this invention and may be changed as desired. In this machine the tank, the bottle-rests and guides, and the operating-levers are carried by the upright shaft, and the fixed cam 14 on the base is timed to raise the bottles and cause them to automatically operate the filling Serial No. 197,793. mechanism and then lower the bottles, so that they can be easily removed from the machine.
The present invention is designed to facilitate the adjustment of the machine for filling bottles of different heights such as pints and quarts, for example; and it consists, essentially, in providing the upright shaft with a screw-thread 20 to receive a threaded collar 21, which supports a sleeve 22, fastened to the bottom of the tank. This sleeve constitutes a socket to receive the upper end of the upright shaft, and it is provided with a flange 23, which fits in a groove 24 in the collar to connect these parts together. This collar is divided into two parts, so that it can be arranged in place on the sleeve and shaft, and these parts are fastened together by bolts 25 and provided with the operating-handles 26. The sleeve is split longitudinally at 27 on one side and provided with bosses 28 to receive an adjusting-bolt 29,provided with a handle 30.
In practice the machine is adjusted to bottles of a particular height by moving the tank vertically on the upright shaft, and this is done easily and quickly by turning the collar. The bolt 29 is then tightened to clamp the sleeve securely upon the shaft to prevent the parts from slipping while the machine is in operation. I preferably provide a pin 31 in the sleeve to travel in a groove 32 in the shaft for the purpose of preventing the tank from turning relatively to the shaft. By this means the machine can be easily and quickly adjusted to bottles of diiferent heights, so that very little loss of time will occur. It will be'noted also that by the single adjustment of the tank on the shaft I adjust all the filling-valve mechanisms to the same degree and without changing their position with relation to the tank. As it sometimes happens that bottles of a certain height vary slightly in height, I prefer to interpose a spring 33 between the bottle-rest and its stem to provide for such variations.
While I have shown and described this invention as embodied in a machine in which the liquid-tank carrying the filling mechanism and the bottle raising and lowering devices are connected to and revolved with the upright shaft, it Will be apparent that so far as this invention is concerned the shaft which forms the support for the tank may be stationary and the filling-valve mechanism and the bottle raising and. lowering means variously constructed as may be desired.
W'ithout limiting the invention to the exact construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Abottle-tilling machine comprising a liquid-tank, a support provided With a screW- thread, a sleeve on the tank to receive the end of said support, and a threaded collar operating on the threaded portion of the support and connected. to said sleeve.
2. A bottle-filling machine comprising a liquid-tank, a support, a split sleeve on the tank to receive the end of said support, means for clamping said sleeve on the support, and means for adjusting the sleeve and tank on the support.
3. Ahottle-[illing machine,comprisingaliquid-tank, a support provided with a screwthread, a split sleeve on the tank to receive the end of said support, means for clamping said sleeve on the support, and a threaded collar operating on the threaded portion of the support and connected to said sleeve for adjusting the tank on the support.
