SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,916, dated August 30, 1904. Application filed November '7, 1903. Serial No. 180,254 (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FLOYD D. Srown, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of *ilmington, Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Finishing-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to finishing rolls or cylinders employed in the manufacture of leather for the purpose of shaving green hides or tanned skins, to flesh green hides, to put out skins, and other analogous uses in the manufacture of leather; and it consists of certain improvements in the manner of holding the blades of such roll or cylinder in place.
My invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a finishing roll or cylinder of the character to which my invention has been applied, showing several ways in which the blades may be held in place. Fig. 2 is a view in section illustrating one form of my holding device, taken on the line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view illustrating another form of my holding device, taken on the line b b, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view illustrating still another form of holding device, taken on the line 0 c, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a similar sectional View illustrating a still further means of securing the blades to the roll.
The rolls or cylinders to which my invention is applied are those of familiar use in the manufacture of leather for shaving, fleshing, and putting out the skins and hides, having a series of blades usually, though not necessarily, arranged helically around the surface of the roll and abutting on a general line taken through the body of the same at right angles thereto. Heretofore in the manufacture of 'such rolls it has been the common practice to is to be done, the calking-strips which have held them in place must be removed, and this is a most diflicult process, as such calking-strips must be put in very solidly in order to stand the strain put upon the blades of the roll. Consequently the removal of the same is a most difiicult operation and may only be accomplished with the aid of a cold-chisel and hammer. Moreover, after repeated calkings and removals the grooves for the blades become so battered and marred that they soon become worthless. By my invention, however, I overcome this difiiculty entirely, and the blades may be removed and replaced at any time desired in a comparatively short time without damaging the roll, the grooves in which the blades are held, or the blades themselves.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 1 represents the body of the roll or cylinder, which in the present instance carries a series of helicallycurved blades 2, and I have shown such roll as being provided with several different devices designed to hold said blades in place.
The preferred device for holding the blades in place is shown at 3 in Fig. 1 and in sectional view Fig. 2. This consists of a curved block which may be cast, forged, or otherwise made and which'is arranged to fit in a recess 4, milled out or otherwise formed in the cylinder adjacent to the groove 5 for the blade,
such recess being arranged at intervals with respect to the blade, and such block 3 is held in place by a bolt 6. The. blade 2 enters the groove 5 and seats against the bottom of the same. The engaging face 7 of the block 3 rests against the blade, as shown in Fig. 2, and said block is cut away at 8 below said engaging face. When the bolt 6 is screwed into place, it will cause the block to impinge against the blade and securely hold the same in place.
The next form of blade-securing means, following the preferred form of my improved device, is that illustrated on the right-hand side of Fig. 1 and clearly shown in sectional view Fig. 3. In this form of securing means the groove 5 to receive the blade has an angular ledge 9 at the bottom, upon which the blade is set, such groove serving also to receive a strip of softer metal, which is placed against the blade, such strip being indicated at 10, having a beveled face 11 and extending below the bottom of the ledge or shoulder upon which the blade rests. To secure this strip against the blade, whereby the latter may be held in place, 1 provide a series of clamping pieces or bushings 15, adapted to recesses 16, formed at intervals alongside the grooves for the blades, and these pieces will be held in place by means of bolts 6. These pieces or bushings 15 are provided with beveled Walls 17, which engage the beveled face 11 of the strip 10.
Another form of retaining device is shown in elevation at the left-hand side of 1 and in section in Fig. i. the groove 5 for the blade has a flat bottom 20, a beveled Wall 21, a straight wall 22, having a ledge or shoulder 23, against which the bottom of the blade rests, and a beveled or straightwa-ll 24 below this shoulder. Arranged to fit these grooves of the roll or cylinder are filling-pieces 25, which may be of the same length as the blade or may be made in sections, and these filling-pieces have faces or walls corresponding to those of the grooves. The filling-pieces are held in place by means of bolts 6". By this means the blades will be securely held in place, and any amount of pressure can be exerted upon the same to grip them to the roll by the tightening up of the bolts.
All of the forms of retaining devices thus described are for rolls which are grooved for the reception of the blades. I find, however, that it will be possible to build up a roll in which the blades are held in place by fillingpieces bent to correspond to the curvature of said blades and the roll and. secured to the latter between the blades, firmly clamping said blades in place by means of suitable bolts. In Fig. 5 1 have illustrated astructure of this character, in which 1 represents the body of the roll or cylinder, 2 the blades, and 3 the filling-pieces, which are secured to the roll between said blades, being provided with bolts 6 to secure them to the roll, such bolts entering threaded recesses in said roll. 1 prefer, however, to use the forms of retaining devices in which separate clamping members or bushings are employed, as such bushings will provide a better gripping engagement on the blades than they would. otherwise have and will permit tightening should the blades loosen from any cause. In each instance the retaining members are provided with sockets 31 for the heads of the bolts, so as to dispose such heads below the surface of the roll and prevent any interference with the work of In this form of structure the same, and clearance is provided around said bolts and their heads to permit lateral movement of the retaining devices.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination in a finishing roll or cylinder for use in the manufacture of leather, of the roll-body, a series of independent helicallycurved blades fitted in grooves and extending radially from said body, and means for holding said blades in place, comprising independent clamping members secured to the roll and disposed at different points in the surface of the roll and in engagement with said blades.
2. The combination in'a finishing roll or cylinder for use in the manufacture of leather, of the roll-body having a series of helical grooves, a series of helical blades mounted. in said grooves and extending radially from the body, means for holding said blades in place, comprising clamping-pieces of a shape to follow the curvature of the roll and the curvature of the blades, and means carried by said clamping-pieces for securing them to the roll whereby they will engage the blades, said clamping-yfieces being disposed at different points in the surface of said roll.
3. The combination in a finishing roll or cylinder for use in the manufacture of leather, of the roll-body having a series of helical grooves, a series of blades curved to lit said grooves and extending radially from the body of the roll, clamping-pieces to engage said blades, and means for securing said clampingpieces to the roll whereby the blades will be held in place, said roll being recessed at different points adjacent to the grooves to receive the clamping-pieces.
4. The combination in a finishing roll or cylinder for use in the manufacture of leather, of the body of the roll having a series of helical grooves, independent helically-curved blades arranged to lit in said grooves, said blades extending radially from said roll, the body of the roll having a series of concaved recesses adjacent to the grooves for the blades, clamping-pieces fitting said recesses for holding the blades in place, and means for securing said clamping-pieces to the roll or cylinder.
