To It whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THEODORE W. GLAD- HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beardstown, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Means for Securing Wires to Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is a novel form of an attaching member adapted to be secured to a fence and post for holding the line-wire to the post, the essential feature of the device consisting in the provision of a peculiarly-formed opening in the member, within whichthe line-wire is disposed and Whichserves to frictionally secure the said wire in its proper position. The attaching member is especially adapted to be embedded in posts of plastic form, though its use is not necessarily confined to this particular form of post, as will be understood as the description proceeds.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for eflfecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a post, showing a post of plastic structure, showing a number of the attaching members carried by the post and line-wires secured to the said members. Fig. 2 is atop plan view illustrating the manner of disposing the wires within the opening in the attaching member, the form of the tool utilized for this purpose being shown. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of Fig. 4L is a side elevation of the attaching member.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

As before described, the attaching member 1 is shown in connection with a post 2 of plastic structure. The structure of the post is non-essential, since the invention rests in the form of the attaching means only. The member 1 consists ofa shank 1*, having at one end a head 3 of approximately hook form, which is embedded in the plastic post at the time the latter is molded the head 3 constituting an anchoring means for preventing displacement of the member 1. The end of the shank 1 opposite to that upon which the head 3 is disposed is transversely enlarged to afford a greater bearing-surface for the wire when received Within the opening 4, which is disposed transversely of the enlarged end of the attaching member. A disalined slot 5 leads from the upper side of the attaching member to the opening 4 therein, the said slot 5 constituting entrance means through which the wire is adapted to be passed when disposing the same within the opening 4. In order to introduce the wire within the opening 4, it is necessary that the same be thrown in'alinement with the entrance-slot 5, after which it may be forced into the opening 4 in a manner readily apparent. The opening 4 is in line with the line- Wires, and since the slot 5 extends at an angle to the openingtthe Wire is prevented from displacement by projecting lips 6, which are formed by the peculiar disposal of the slot 5. The wire being taut, it is prevented from upward movement by the lips 6, which to a certain extent overlap the opening 4 and serve in the capacity of stops to prevent upward movement of the wire after same has been introduced into the opening in the member 1.

The implement used for manipulating the Wire so as to place the same in engaging relation with the member 1 consists of a handle 7, having arms 8 and 9 to engage the wire. The arm 8 is provided with a hook 10, and

the arm 9 has a recess 11 upon the end thereof, which receives the wire when the implement is operated in the manner applied in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

The post 2 is provided with any number of engaging members 1, this depending upon the number of the line-wires of the fence.
