SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,133, dated August 23, 1904. Application filed August '7, 1961. Serial No. 71,161. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK A. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Closers and Checks for Operating Disinfectant Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to that class of door closers and checks for disinfectant devices in which an air-forcing device is attached to the door of the room to be disinfected and is actuated by the opening or closing movement of the door to force air through a suitable atomizing device, which disseminates the disinfectant in the atmosphere of the room; and
' my invention has for its primary object to provide an improved and simple form of device of this character which shall also act as a door-check, so that the spring whichcloses the door may be utilized in conjunction'with the air-forcing piston forforcing the'air through the atomizer during apart of its recoiling action, but will be resisted during the latter part of its recoiling action andthe door thus prevented from slamming Without impairing the air-forcing functions of the apparatus.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts by which the said bjects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing are attained, all as fully described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter more particularly pointed out and claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved apparatus, showing the door in dotted lines and door-frame .to which it is applied in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view of the pump-cylinder and connected parts; and'Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the apparatus applied to a door, drawn on a smaller scale.
1 is the door or other movable device to which the apparatus is applied, 2 being the door jamb or frame, and 3 is a pump-cylinder which is pivotally secured at its inner end to some fixed part of the building, such as slowlyby the action of the spring 15.
the top of the door frame or jamb. For this purpose the cylinder is provided at one end with a pair of ears 4, through which passes a pivot-pin 5, pivotally connecting the same to a bracket 6, which is secured to the top portion of the door-frame 1, as shown in Fig. 3. This pump-cylinder is provided with a piston 7, having a piston-rod 8, Whose outer end has an eye 9 pivoted to an upwardly-elongated lug 10, which is secured to an arm 11, having spring connection at one end with the door 1 and connected by a rod 12 at its opposite end to the bracket 6, the rod 12 having a hook at each end engaging in eyes 13 14: in the arm 11 and bracket 6, respectively, so that when the door is open the oscillation of the arm 11 with reference to the piston-rod 8 will pull the rod outwardly from the cylinder, as shown in.
dotted lines in Fig. 1, and when the door is released the spring connection between the door and arm 11 will close the door and return the parts to the position shown in full lines in said figure. The spring connection between the arm 11 and the door may be of the usual or any suitable construction. In the example of the invention shown in the drawings it consists of a coiled spring 15, which is secured at one end to one of a pair of brackets 16, fastened to the face of the door -1, and at the other end to a depending stem or shaft 17, projecting above the edge of the door and carrying the arm 11.
As the piston is impelled inwardly by the force of the spring 15 the air is driven out of the cylinder 3 through a discharge-port 18 into a tube 19, Which extends to the atomizing device 20, the tube 19 being preferably connected to the port-tube 18 by a flexible connection 21. The port-tube 18, however, is located a considerable distance from the inner end of the cylinder, so as to constitute an air-cushion at such end after the piston passes the porttube, and consequently checking the closing movement of the door, permitting it to close In order, however, that the air at the inner end of the cylinder may be allowed to escape with I each instance to suit the piston of the particular apparatus, the inner end of the cylinder is provided with a vent-tube 22, having a conical valve-seat 23 and which may be closed more or less by a pointed fiat-sided screw 24:. The vent-tube being connected with the aircushion is also adapted to relieve the suction on the disinfectant device when the door is opened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A door closer and check for operating disinfectant devices comprising a disinfectant device, a pipe extending from the disinfectant device, a cylinder adapted to be pivoted to a door, a vent-tube located at the inner end of the cylinder, for relieving the suction on the pipe of the disinfectant device when the door is opened, and having an adj ustable valve for controlling the vent-tube, a port-tube located at a considerable distance from the inner end of the cylinder so as to leave an air-cusl1ion, a flexible tube connecting the pipe of the disinfectant device with the port-tube, a piston working in the cylinder, a piston-rod, a springarin adapted to be connected with a door and having a rod connected with the piston-rod, and a rod adapted to connect the arm with a door-frame.
