PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUELMONTGOMERY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
, PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,951, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed September 12,1903. Seria1N0.1'73,009. (N model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MONTGOMERY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in picks; and its object is to provide a tool of this character having detachable bits which can be securely held within the I head of the tool without the use of screws.
A further object is to provide hits the sur faces of which are flush with the surfaces of the head of the pick, so as to present smooth surfaces.
Another object is-to provide sockets within the head for the'reception of bits, said sockets being so arranged as to be readily cleaned of rust, dirt, or other material which may accumulate therein and which would tend to prevent or retard the insertion of the bits.
A further object is to employ securing means for the bits whereby said bits can be readily removed and replaced when desired. With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a section through a pick, showing the bits secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line-3 3, Fig. 1;.and Fig. A is an inner ele-' vation of one of the socketed portions of the pick and a portion of the bit in position there- Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is the head of the pick, the same hav- 1 ing an eye 2 therein and oppositely-extendtion of the wall of the socket.
the outer end of each arm is formed a socket 5, one wall of which is cut away for a part of its length, as shown at 4. A bit 6 of any suitable form is provided for each arm 3, and each of these bits hasa tongue 7, adapted to fit snugly within the socket 5 and the slot 4 formed by the cut-away por- Transverselying arms 3. In
extending apertures 8 are formed within each 'inner end of the socket.
bit and the side walls of the socket 5 and are adapted to receive securing-pins 9.
When it is desired to secure a bit to the head 1, the tongue 7 thereof is inserted into the socket 5 and slot 4, so as to bring the shoulders 10, formed at the inner end of the tongue, into contact with the end of the arm 3 and the The pin 9 is then forced through the apertures 8 and will hold the bit securely in position within the head. When it is desired to remove the bit for the purpose of repairing or replacing it, it is merely necessary to force the pin 9 out of its apertures 8.
Should dirt, rust, or other material accu-' mulate within the socket 5, it can be readily cleaned therefromin view of the fact that the inner face of the socket is open, as shown at 11.
The tool is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, and any desired form of bit can be used in connection with the head.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of myinvention; but Ido not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and 1 therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as may fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t In a pick, the combination with a head having an arm, and a socket'in one end of the arm, said socket having one wall cut away to form a slot; of a bit adapted to abut against the arm, a tongue integral with and extending from the bit, said tongue being adapted to fit snugly within the socket and slot, and means for securing the tongue within the socket, whereby smooth continuous surfaces are produced by the faces of the arm and bit;
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL MON TGOMERY.
