IMPROVEMENT IN eAs-RBrLsoToss.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. McIiEA, of Buffalo, in the county ot Erie,.and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Light Relectors; and I do hereby declare that the following. is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable rothersskilled in ,the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, lforming part of' this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a view of my improved-reflectors lin one position, one being removed to show the operating'- apparatus. l
Figure 2, a view ofthe same in another position.-

This invention relatestoan improvementu in the construction ofgas-light reectors, and consists in connecting ordinary reflectors with an apparatus ofjointed and sliding rods,j.and pliant gas-tubes, in such al manner that the reectors may be moved in their .position as' desired, for the reflection of light at different degrees of depression or elevation. By the einploymentpof this apparatus a great increase of light is obtained from A represents a gas-chamber o1' fecd-fountain, which to be' connectedat the lower end with an ordinary gas-pipe, wherever the reiiectors are required, as shown in the drawings. The chamber A has a cap-piece, B, and is surmounted with a vertical rod, a, with a knobhead, ign-Laird which has fitted on it a slide-piece, C, which 'is moved up and down on the rod by means of arod', e, that `passes through guides e c, lat the top and bottom l of the gas-chamber A. D D are gas-reiiectors, made lof-polished metal, as usual, which are suspended by rods d d, fastened in ,the middle at their back, -and hingedA tothe cap-piece 2B, so that they shall haven vertical movement; and at their upper part also, bylinks g g, that-are-Shinged atene end to lugs h It', on the back of the reflectors, and at the other end tovprojections on' the slide'O, so that 'theyoalsofshall have a vertical movement directly in line with the connecting-rods [Z d, with which they'may thus mcv'e'up and downin'concert, to
elevate or depress the reflectors, as the slide C is raised or lowered on the upright rod u, bye sliding rod, c.
At the bottom of the chamber A are nipple gas-vents,'z'.z', as .many in` number as may. be required -by the reflectors, and on each nipple is fastened an .India-rubber tube, m, which 'leadsf'the gas tothe' rear end ot' a burner, lc, introduced in cach retiectorD. This4 construction'of the gas-chamber A, with vents at 'the bottom, tends to break the rush'ot` gas directly out of thev vents, and toseeure a steady light by'a regular flow-'of the gas. 4 l l I D, the reflectors may be raised or lowered at any angle of elevation or depression, to throw the light upon any1 desired point within range. l i
My invention is'npt conned to the shape and number ofthe reictors attached to one gas-chamber, nor to the position of the sliding-rod,u as that maymovc horizontally, as well as vertcaliy, nor to the particular device for operating the rod, as a screw, lever, or eccentric, may be employed to' produce the same movement.
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-' A The combination ofthe gas-chamber A, the rod a, the slide C, the sliding rod c, -the reflectors D, and the rubber gas-tubes m, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as-and for the purposes herein described.
' WILLIAM J. McLEA.
