Letters Patent No. 76,761, dated April 14, i868.
IMPROVEMENT IN ICE-PITCHERS.
dln ste-halt nutten it it tinte Vtttett @tout tnt mating gint nf tigt nur.
'ro ALL wHoM 1T MAY coNonnN:
Beit known that I, Ronnnr HOLMES, of Middletown, in the county ofMiddlesex, and'State'of Connection@ have invented a'new and improved Ice-Pitcher; and I do hereby declnrethatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable those skilled in the art to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention is designed to-obviate the -diiiiculty attendingthe lack of al proper support for the inner wall of the pitcher. This inner lwall requires to be very rmly secured in position, and its bottom thoroughly well supported, as' the latter is liable tobe forced off, or thc-soldered Ascam or joint, by which it is connected to Beside this contingency, the inner wall, when the pitcher is filled with water-containingicc, is very-liable to give laterally when 'the pitcher is tilted to pour water from it, and the soldered seam or `joint, by which the upper end of the inner joint is connected to the external wall, frequently breaks or becomes ruptured under the weight.
My invention fully obv'iates these difficulties, and to this end, it consists in having thebottom or base of the pitcher, which is attached to the external wall, detachable, and connected to said wall by escrow-joint, so, that it may be very readily detached whenever necessary, said bottom being provided, at the centre of its upper side, with'a step or projection, to receive a pendent pin atthe centreof the'bottom of the inner wall.
By this arrangement, vwhich is hereinafter. fully shown and described, the inner wall isirmly supported, both laterally and vertically, so that the bottomof the same cannot be forced out, not' the upper joint orseam ruptured. I
The accompanying drawing represents aside sectional view of my invention.
A represents the external wall of an ice-pitcher, provided, as usual, with a hinged lid, B, a nozzle, C, uV
handle, D, and a base, E. All these parts, with the exception of the base, E, may be constructed vinthe ordinary way.
The base, E, instead of beingpermanently attached to the bottom of the external woll, is made separately from it, and is attached thereto by 'rt-screxv-joint, a, as shown clearly in the drawing, which joint admits of the bottom being readily detached, when necessary. l I
F represents the inner wall of the -pitchen'which may be4 constructed in the usual way, and has its upper end connected tothe external wall by a soldered seam or joint, b, as is now practised in the construction of ice-pitchers. l i' I At the under side of the bottom ofthe inner wall there is a pendent pin, e, which iits in a step, d, at the centre of the upper side of the base, E.
v By this means the bottom'of theinner wall is firmly supported, so that 4it cannot be forced outward, and its seam or -joint ruptured by dropping lumps of -ice intov the pitcheryandbesides this support, the innerwall is prevented from being displaced laterally when the pitcher is tilted, the tting of thepin' cin the step d effecting this result.
Hence, the upper seam orjoint, which connects the upper end of' the inner wall to the external one, cannot beruptured, and in case repairsare necessary in the interior ofthe pitcher, the base, E, may be readily unscrewed, so as to render thebottom of the inner wall accessible,l and foulair allowed to escape from the 'space between the inner and outer walls.
. In addition to this, the base, E, heling,r detachable, may, ifit should become bruised or bent by the falling -of the pitcher-a contingency of not unfrequent occurrence-be replaced by a new one, at a small expense, orv the old base, if not too much injured, repaired with far greater facility thanwhcn permanently attached' tothe external wall.
IA claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The proiding of the bottom of the internal wail, F, with n pendent pin, c, to t into a.Y step, d, at the centre of the upper edge of the base, E, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The connecting of the detnchnbie base, E, with the external wall A, by means of yn. screvpf-join t, a, when vsaid detaohnble base is used in connection with the step d, and the pendent pin-c at the bottom of the inner wail,
substantially as set forth.
ROBERT HOLMES.
