Description
UNITED STATES JOHN C. COCHRAN, OF RIPLEY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE TABLES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,809, dated July 11, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. COCHRAN, of Bipley, in the county of Brown and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sewing-machines; and it consists in providing the machine-covers and the tables with means for readily attaching the covers, when removed to use the machines, to the tables, whereby the capacity of the table is increased, and a place is provided for the cover, when removed, in connection with the machine, where it is always at hand when required for replacing.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the table and cover of a sewing-machine provided with my improvenilents. Fig. 2 shows the cover attached to the table, partly in side elevation and partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
For making this connection I prefer to use a circular plate, A, with a large circular hole, B, and a slot, C, for engaging a screw, D, screwed into the table F at the under side of the left end, so that the box having said plate attached to it may be suspended from it, the said plate being let into the top of the box F flush with the surface, near the edge, at the center, between the ends. The slot C extends from the hole B toward the front of the plate, so that, when the box i ble pawl.
is connected to the screw, by passing the head of it through the hole the box is moved from the table, so that the shank is received in the slot and the plate supported by the head. To brace the box near the bottom it is provided with tle bent rods G, which are pivoted to it, so that they will swing down against the legs H of the machine in a manner to support the box very firmly. A slide, I, is arranged in the recess in the top of the box under the plate A to be shoved between the screw-head and the wall of the recess to lock the screw and plate together, so that the box cannot be knocked o r jarred oif. This slide may be operated by a rod, K, or any suita- The braces G swing up by the side of the box when not in use, and are not objectionable on account of projecting.
By this invention the box, which is of no use when the machine is in use, is utilized for a tai ble extension with but a triiling cost, thereby affording the same result that is afforded by the folding tables heretofore used.
Of course I may employ other equivalent means of attaching the cover to the table; and I do not, therefore, limit myself to the devices here shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A cover, E, and table F, combined with plate A'B C, screw D, rods Gr, and slide I, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN O. COCHRAN. Witnesses:
IsAAc MOORE, J. H. MCOLENTIOK.
