BLEACHING AND DYEING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,563, dated August 16, 1904.

I To all whono it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST H OLLE, a citizen of Germany, residing at Dusseldorf, Germany, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bleaching and Dyeing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers to an apparatus for bleaching and dyeing textile materials and containing improvements hereinafter described, the object of the said improvements being the production of machinery required for the apparatus, the securement of a speedy and at the same time equal work, and the removal of disadvantages adhering to the bleaching and dyeing apparatus at present generally in use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of my improved apparatus with the feed-pipe omitted; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the feed-pipe; Fig. '3, a vertical longitudinal section of the apparatus with some of the parts omitted, and Fig. 4 a plan of the apparatus.
With the apparatus hitherto in use the production of a circulation ,of the liquid dyeing or bleaching matter requires a pump for each Vat containing the fluid. In my new device, as illustrated on the drawings, two vats 1 and 2 are communicating with each other by a pipe or pipes or a channel or passage 20, which may be provided at any depth of the vat, while two pipes 4 and 5, emerging from the pump 3, lead into the bottoms of the vessels. The pump is so arranged that when working it sucks the liquid and forces it through all of the said channels and pipes, thus making it circulate through both vessels by conducting it at the pleasure of the dyer into either of the two vats, from which it gets into the other through the first-mentioned channel or passage 20. Thus the work which hitherto required two pumps is with my device done by one pump and the latter takes no larger amount of power than each of the two pumps used under the old system required. A pump of any suitable construction may be used, and there is no restriction as to the construction and shape of the vats. The liquid bleaching or dyeing matter may be inducted into the vessels through a perforated bottom or through perforated pipes 5 or in any other suitable way.
In order to supply and discharge the dyeing or bleaching liquid, a pipe 10, provided with a hose 11, is attached to the apparatus, as shown in Fig. 2. To this pipe a three-way cook 12 is attached to shut it ofi altogether or connect it with either of the pipes 13 or 14, communicating with the aforementioned pipes 4 and 5, both of which may be shut off by cocks or valves provided for the purpose, and then by opening one or the other of the pipes the liquid is conducted to one or the other vessel or removed from the one and led to the other.
A disadvantage of the customary apparatus is that frequently the liquid passes those spots where it is entering or leaving the vat in larger quantities than at other places. In order to effectuate an equal distribution of the bleaching or dyeing matter in the vats and an equal application of the liquid to the textile material under process of dyeing, I place in each of the vats 1 and 2 a series of horizontal of equal size; but those which are farther off from the entry or mouth are largerthan those near to it, or instead of enlarging the holes in accordance with their distance from the mouth they maybe arranged at smaller spaces between each other, or at the more remote spots more perforations could be provided than near the bottom of the vat. The gradual increase of the size of the holes will not only cause a more equal distribution of the liquid dye in the vats, but will also effectuate amore equal spreading of the same within the perforated casings 18, holding the stuff intended for treatment, the perforations of the said casings being likewise gradually increasing from bottom to top, so that while the liquid enters first the holes of the lower casings the quantity of liquid passing through will not be larger than that passing through the casings above.
Another feature of my apparatus is the improved arrangement of the said perforated casings 18 in such a way that the paper wrappers or spools 21, holding the stuff for treatment, which are also perforated, can be easily mounted without being injured. The said casings are each provided in their middle with a flange 22 and are mounted half-way in one spool 21 of a set, the spool next above being placed over the projecting upper half of the casing. The casings touching each other in the middle of each spool accomplish the connection of the spools mounted upon each other and keep them fast together. The spools next to the bottom of the vessel are each held fast by the nozzle 9 or 9, upon which it is mounted. The casings thus improved permit their being set up and removed again without requiring the long pipe over which they were formerly slid. The touching each other of the perforated spool-stands prevents the breaking and deformation of the paper casings.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. In a bleaching and dyeing apparatus, the combination of an inlet-pipe with a communicating distributing-pipe having a series of nozzles the passages of which gradually increase in diameter in proportion to the distance of said nozzles from the inlet-pipe,substantially as specified.
2. In a bleaching and dyeing apparatus, the combination of a pair of communicating vats with a pair of inlet-pipes entering the same, a pump for forcing liquid through said pipes, and'a series of communicating distributingpipes in the vats that are provided with nozzles the passages of which gradually increase in diameter in proportion to the distance of said nozzles from the inlet-pipes, substantially as specified.
3. In a bleaching and dyeing apparatus, the combination of a distributing-pipe having a nozzle with a series of superposed perforated casings projecting upwardly from the nozzle, the perforations in the casings gradually increasing in diameter from the bottom upward, substantially as specified.
