W. D. GUSEMAN, OF MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA.
Latas Patent No. 76,751, ma April 14,1868.
- IMPROVEMENT IN IIREPLGES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. D. GUSEMAN, of Morgantown, in the county of Monongalia, and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Grates; .and I do hereby declarekthat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference boing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention-relates to a new and useful improvement in {ire-gratos, for which Letters Patent were granted to me, bearing date June 30, 1863.
The present invention consists in providing the grate with a projecting front, which is some distance above the grate, andprojects over or beyond the front of the same, as hereinafter fully shown and described, sov as'to catch'all dirt which may emanate from the grate, and cause it to enter the ue, said projecting flue also increasing the draught of the grate. i
The invention also consists in combining with the projecting front aforesaid a sliding blower or screen, as hereinafter set forth. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention.
' VFigure 2, a side view of thesaine.
Similar letter-s of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the side-pieces of thegrate, the upper parts of which are of curved form, and portions of circles which extend outward beyond the lower portions', between which portions the grate B is fitted, as shown in iig. 1. The upper parts of the' curved portionsv of the side-pieces have a cap, C, attached, which extends down to about a line pass'ing horizontally through the centre of a circle, of which the curved upper portions of the side-pieces form a part, said cap forming a projecting front to the grate, some distance above and at the outer side of thc'front of the grate, as shown clearly in iig. 1. This projecting'front 'insures the passage of dirt which may emanate from the grate passing up into the iueD of the same, and said front also forms a hot air chamber, a, above the grate, which greatly increases the draught, and eifectually prevents smoke, gases, Sie., escaping into the room.
Each side-piece A, at its inner side, and a short distance from the edges of the curved portions, has curved cleats b attached, to form guides for a cur-ved4 blower or screen, E, which works between the cleats and the cap C, and is allowed to slide freely between the said parts. v'
The curvature of the blower or screen E corresponds with the curvature of thecap C, as shown clearly in iig. I, and saidv blower or screen isy moved, raised, and lowered, by bent arms c from a shaft, D,- which has a lever, d, at one end, at the outer side o f one of the side-pieces A. The blower or screen, when lowered, has its lower edge in contact with the top of the grate B, and, when raised, its upper edge is about in line with the lower edge of the cap or projecting front C. v
When a strong draught is required, as for instance in kindliug a re, or after fresh coal is put on, the blower or screen is moved down, so as to completely cover the space between the lower edge of thc cap C and the upper part of the grate B.
I do not claim separately the blower or screen, as that has been previously used, and formed one of' the features of the {ire-grate formerly patented by me.
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The projecting front or cap C, above and beyond the perpendicular line of the front ofy the grate, substantially as and for the purpose specified, Y
2. The sliding blower or screen E, in combination with the projecting front or cap C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 1st day of February, 1868.
W. D.'GUSEMAN.
