Be it known that we, FRANK lsl. CHAMBER- LIN and RAYuoND H. COLEMAN, citizens o'li' the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State ot' Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful linprovenient in Telephone Attachments, oil which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being' had t'o the accompanying drawings. i

This invention relates to an attachment adapted to be used with a telephone and carry the names and numbers of the most usual calls.

The object oi' the invention is to provide such an attachment in a form which will be cheap in construction, neat in appearance, and'r in which the names on the indicator shall not be ordinarily visible.

To this end theinvention consists oi aroller having attached thereto a flexible strip carrying the names and numbers, means `for rotating the roller in the direction to wind up the strip, a casing covering said parts and having a slot through which the strip passes, and a suitable bracket for supporting these members.

The more specilic embodiment oi' theinvention shown herein is also of our invention.

Referring t0 the parts by letters, A. represents the vertical standard of a desk-telephone. B is a bracket, which is clamped thereto by means oi' a clamping-plate B', bolts b, and butterfly-nuts bf. This arrangement allows the bracket to be adjusted to the desired height. Carried by the upper end of the bracket is a horizontal stationary rod C. On this rod is loosely mounted the spooll), having flanges Z d at its ends. Beyond one end of the spool is a spiral spring F, the inner end c oi' which takes into an opening in the rod and the outer end c of which is secured Serial No. 147,181. (No model.)l

Surrounding the rod C against the outer face of the standard B is the cap F, which has a perforated flange. Into this .liange lits the end oli a cylindrical casing Cr, the casing being closed at its outer end, except that it has an opening to pass over the rod C. Screwing onto the outer end oi' the rod C is a butterlly-nut lil', which clamps the easing in place. Y

lhrough the cylindrical casing Cr on the front side is a slot g, extending nearly the length oi the casing. Through this slot extends the llexible strip J, on which is written or printed the telephone-directory desired. The inner end ot' this strip winds around the spool fl) in the opposite direction ironi the spring E, wherefore the spring tends to wind up the strip. At the extreme outer end oi the strip is a bar j, limiting the inward movement of the strip.

ln the normal position of the parts the strip J is entirely wound up within the casing and the slot is covered by the bar y'. Thus the structure is very tight and substantially dustproof. Moreover, the directory is normally out of sight, which is a great advantage not only on account of neatness and cleanliness, but because the telephone user frequently does not care to have his private list oi' calls exposed to view.

Vhen the user desires to look up a call, he simply takes hold of the bar y' and pulls the strip out until he comes to the vname he is looking l'or. The casing adjacent to the slot makes a guide across the strip, and the eye resting on this point as the strip is drawn out will allow the drawing out of the strip very rapidly without danger oi: missing the name wanted. lil desired, the capacity oi.E the strip may be increased by writing the directory on both sides thereof.
