APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 17, 1913.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. SGHWANENGEL AND CHARLES H. HANAUER, 0F DAYTON, OHIO.
CLOTHES-LINE REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1914.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. SCHWA- NENGEL and CHAnLns H. HANAUER, citizens of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-nine Reels; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain defined improvements in clothes line reels.
More specifically speaking, the invention relates to two features, first, the means for winding the spindle of the reel, and second, the means for mounting the frame which supports the winding reel so that it may be mounted and swung to various positions.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a clothes line reel showing our improvements; Fig. 2 is a side elevation with part broken away; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line a a of F ig. 1 showing the means for pivotally supporting the reel frame.
In the accompanying drawings and description, similar reference characters in dicate corresponding parts.
The frame 1 of the reel is of rectangular shape and each end thereof is provided with an inwardly extending apertured boss 2 by means of which the said frame may be pivotally mounted upon any convenient support such, for example, as a post or other upright. The bosses 2 are centrally disposed at each end of the pivotal frame. By reason of their lying within the confines of the frame any sagging of the frame on the supporting bracket is avoided. One side of the frame, to-wit, the side opposite the crank, and one end of said frame are provided with screw holes 15 for the insertion of screws when it is necessary to mount the frame stationary on any inside support. When the frame is mounted in this manner the pivot bracket 3 is not utilized. Cooperating with either of the apertured bosses 2 is a bracket 3 which is secured to the post or support a by a suitable number of screws 5. The said bracket 3 is provided with apertures in its parallel arms which receive a pivot pin 6 which also passes through the apertured boss 2 of the reel frame which is received between said bracket arms. Owing to this pivotal connection of the frame 1, it
may be swung to suitable positions to wind or unwind the clothes line. This feature is of practical utility in many instances, for example, where it is not convenient to extend the clothes line in a straight line from spool 8 upon the ends of which flanges 9 are mounted.
10 designates a ratchet wheel rigidly mounted 011 the shaft 7 on the outside of the frame and 11 designates a crank which is freely rotatable upon the end of said shaft in proximity to the ratchet wheel 10. The said crank carries a double acting pawl 12 which engages the ratchet wheel 10 to rotate the same in either direction. Either engagement of the pawl 12 with the ratchet wheel is maintained by a spring 13. 14 is a similar pawl pivoted to the outside of the frame 1 and engaging said ratchet wheel to prevent any retrograde movement of the reel. Like the pawl 12 the said pawl 14 is maintained in either engagement with the ratchet wheel by a spring 13.
Having described our invention, we claim A clothes line .reel, comprising a frame having at each end a centrally disposed and inwardly projected aportured boss, and openings in said frame on each side of said bosses, whereby said frame may be pivotally mounted, or the ends thereof readily secured to a level surface, a reel mounted in said frame, and means for rotating said reel, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
