SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,721, dated August 2, 1904.

To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE HORACE MoNTooMni-un Y AG'RAMONTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Mexico, Republic of Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to hydrocarbonburners; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a means for gasifying hydrocarbon oils and burning the same, consisting of a retort of special construction having a gasifying-chamber located above and connected to the same, the gas from the said gasifying-chamber being led to a burner located below the retort and also to a burner located above the retort. A means is provided for forcing the oil into the retort from a tank by water-pressure.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the retort, partly in section, and the gasifying-chaniber in section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the gasifying-chamber cut on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. & is a top plan view of the retort, partly in section. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the retort-support. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the retort-support. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the burner-casing. Fig. 8 is a bottom view of said burner-easing.
The apparatus consists of the tank 1, which is adapted to contain hydrocarbon oil, said tank being provided with the upper glass levelgage 2 and the lower glass level-gage 3. The inlet oil-pipe & is provided with the valve 5. Said oil-pipe L is connected with the upright pipe-section 6, which passes through the bottom of the tank 1 and extends up therein and terminates in the top of the tank, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The pipe-section 7 is provided with a check-valve 8 and valves 9 and 10. The section 11 leads from the valve tort 12. the ash-pit of the furnace.

The bottom of the retort 12 is provided with the bifurcated lugs 13, which are bolted to the upper ends of the uprights 14 of the support 15, the upper ends of the said uprights 1e entering the space between the bifurcations of the lugs 13 in such manner that the weight of the retort 12 and its attachments is borne by the uprights 1 and not by the bolts that secure the said uprights to the said lugs. At an intermediate point the said uprights 14 are integrally joined to a central table 16, said table being adapted to support a burner 17. The top of the said table 16 is provided with the integral lugs 18, and located upon the top of said table and surrounding the said lugs 18 is the bu rner-casing 19, the said burner-casing 19 being provided in its sides with the airports 20. The coupling 21 is integrally attached to the lower side of the table 16, and the drip-pipe 22 is attached to the lowest point of said coupling, the said pipe being provided with a valve 23. The gas-pipe 24 is attached to the side of the coupling 21. Said pipe 24 extends at its upper end out from the gasifying-chamber 25, then down along the front wall of the furnace and into the burner. The pipe 26 is connected with the pipe 24: and is provided with a valve 27, the said pipe 26 being also connected with the upper burner 28. The section of the pipe 24 between the point of connection with the pipe 26 and the lowler T 1e retort 12 is cylindrical in shape and is provided with a bottom 30, which is made on a frustum of a cone. The central tube 31 leads vertically through the said retort 12, the center of the said tube 31 being in vertical alinement with the center of the burner 17. The pipe 32 is connected at its inner end to the lowest point of the retort 12 and passes horizontally through the wall of the furnace. The pipe 33 is connected at its inner end to the highest point of the retort 12 and passes through the wall of the furnace parallel to the pipe The glass level-gage 3a is connected to the outer ends of the pipes 32 and 33. The top of the retort 12 is provided with a handhole 35, which is normally closed by a plate 36. The top of the said retort 12 is also provided with a vapor-outlet 37, located diametrically opposite the said hand-hole 35 and being substantially of the same shape and formation.
. chamber 38 is attached to the top of the retort 12 over the outlet 37. The partition 39 is located within the gasifying-chamber 38 and is made integral therewith. The lower end of the said partition 39 extends from the inner wall of the said gasifying-chamber 38 and passing up parallel to the longitudinal axis of the said chamber terminates near the top of the same. The cap 40 closes the upper end of the gasifying-chamber. The sheetmetal partition 41 is bolted at its upper end to the cap 40 and extends down into the gasifying-chamber 38 between the partition 39 and the lower wall of the said chamber. The said chamber 38 is pitched at an oblique angle and extends over the upper end of the tube 31. The said chamber 38 is elliptical in crosssection, as shown in Fig. 3, and as the plate 41 is flat the longitudinal edges of the said plate rest against the lower wall of the said gasifying-chamber. The lower side of the gasifying chamber 38 is provided with a sharpened web or rib 42, which extends along the longitudinal axis of the said chamber 38. The lower end of the plate 41 is held in place by the bolts 43, which pass through the lower side of the said chamber 38 and along perforations in the lower end of said plate 41. The cap 40 is provided with an outlet 44, the lower end of which is located between the lower wall of the gasifying-chamber 38 and the plate 41. The inner end of the pipe 24 is connected to the upper end of theoutlet 44 of the cap 40. The water-supply pipe 45 is connected with the bottom of the tank 1, said supplypipebeing provided with a valve 46, located within a sewer connection of the said pipe. The said pipe 45 is also provided with a valve 47, located in the connection with the streetpressure. The glass level-gage 34 is provided with a drip-outlet 48, which is provided with a valve 49.
The operation of the device is as follows: The
valve 5 is opened and oil is admitted through the pipes 4 and 6 into the tank 1. When the said tank is filled, which may be readily ascertained by referring to the gages 2 and 3, the valve 5 is closed. The valve 47 is then opened and water is admitted through the pipe 45 into the bottom of the tank 1 under the oil previously run therein. As the water above referred to is under street-pressure, this same pressure is conveyed to the oil, and as the oil will not mix with the water it remains in the upper portion of the tank 1. The valves 9 and 10 are then opened and the oil is forced down through the pipe 6 into pipe 7 and through pipe 11 into the retort 12. The said retort 12 is then heated by a torch or any other suitable means, which converts the said The lower end of' the gasifying oil into a vapor. The said vapor passes up through the outlet 37 into the gasifyingchamber 38. The said chamber having also been previously heated, the vapor is converted into a gas, which passes around the upper end of the partition 39, then down along the under side of the same and around the lower end of the plate 41, then up along the under side of the same, then out through the outlet 44 into the pipe 24. The valve 27 is then opened, and a portion of the gas passes through pipe 26 to the burner 28, where it is ignited and supplies the necessary heat for a boiler or other apparatus. The gas also passes down the pipe 24 to the burner 17, where it is mixed with the air entering the casing 19 through the openings 20 and is ignited under the retort 12. The flame from the burner 17 passes vertically through the tube 31 of the retort 12. Thus the said retort is heated and the contents thereof vaporized. The flame passes up and comes in contact with the obliquely extending gasifying chamber 38. The sharpened lower edge of the web 42 cleaves the said flame, so that the said gasi fying-chamber 38 is enveloped by the flame and becomes intensely hot,'which facilitates the gasification of the vapor passing through the said chamber, as above described. By consulting the gage 34 the level of the oil within the retort 12 may be ascertained.
When the device is not in use and it is desired to drain the retort 12, the valve 49 is opened and the contents of the said retort (residuum and oil) will pass out through the pipe 32 and drip-outlet 48. When the tank 1 is emptied of oil after prolonged operation of the burner, the valve 47 is closed and the valve 46 is opened. Thus the water in the said tank 1 passes down through the pipe 45 into the sewer. When the said tank 1 is thus emptied, the valve 46 is closed, and the operation above described is repeated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a burner, a retort connected thereto and having a tube leading vertically therethrough, a burner located under the lower end of said tube, a gasifyingchamber located on top of the retort and extending diagonally over the upper end of said tube.
2. In combination with a burner, a retort connected thereto and having a vertical tube leading therethrough, a burner located under the lower end of said tube and being connected to said retort, a gasifying-chamber located on top of said retort and extending diagonally over the upper end of said tube and having a web extending along its lower longitudinal axis.
3. A retort having a heating means located thereunder, a gasifying-chamber located over said retort and having partitions whereby the vapor is led through said chamber in longitudinal courses and a burner connected to said gasit'ying-chamber.
I. In combination with a retort provided with suitable heating means, a gasifyingchamber connected to said retort and having in its interior an integral partition connecting at one end one of the walls of said gasifyingchamber a cap closing the end of said chamber and having an outlet, a plate attached to said cap and extending down into the chamber between said partition and one of the walls of said chamber and a burner connected to the outlet of said cap.
5. In combination with a retort, a support therefor consisting of uprights integrally joined together, a table integrally joined to said uprights and being centrally located with relation thereto, integral lugs located upon the upper surface of said table, a burner connection integrally joined to the lower side of said table and a burner-casing adapted to surround said lugs.
6. In combination with a retort having an oil supply connected thereto, a gasifyingchamber attached to said retort and extending diagonally across the same, said gasifying-chamber being elliptical in cross-section and being constructed in its interior in such manner as to compel the vapors to travel in opposite longitudinal courses and a burner connected to the outlet of said gasifyingchamber.
