COMBINED GARMENT, SHELTER-TENT, AND BLANKET-ROLL COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,719, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed March 23, 1904. Serial No. 199,604. (No model.)
To roZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES HAYNES MA- SON, a lieutenant in the Eighth United States Infantry, stationed at Fort \Vood, New York Harbor. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Garment, Shelter-Tent, and Blanket- Roll Covering; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in waterproof coverings, and is especially applicable for use as a soldiers equipment on the march, but may be equally as well adapted for other than army purposes.
The object of the invention is to so construct the waterproof covering as to adapt it for use as a waterproof garment or cape, tent-covering, and covering for blanket-roll or other articles.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following specification, wherein the points of novelty will appear and be claimed.
To more fully understand the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the same and its mode of application for use. in which like characters designate like parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 shows the application for use as a garment or cape; Fig. 2, its applicationas a covering for a blanket-roll on the march; Fig. 3, its application as a tent-covering; Fig. at, a plan view of the covering while flat on the ground in its open and extended position; Fig. 5, a detail fragmentary view of the outer cireumferential portion looking from the inside face and showing the extension-flap fastened up in position, with the method of folding or creasing the outer edge of the extension-flap so as to prevent bulging when inturned and secured; Fig. 6, a detail fragmentary view of the inside face of the extension-flap when opened, showing the tent-peg secured thereto; Fig. 7, a sectional view on the line 7 T of Fig. 5 looking to the left and showing the position of the tent-pegs when the extension-flap is inturned and secured. Fig. 8 shows the method of folding the covering for the reception of the blanket-roll; Fig. 9, a plan view of the buckle for the fastening-straps; and Fig. 10, a transverse sectional view through the buckle, showing the manner of securing the ends of the fastening-strap thereto.
1 is the main portion of the covering, composed of a plurality of sections seamed together, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. at, and is of a substantially circular construction when spread out flat, with an angular opening formed therein, the edges of which extend from the center to the outer circular edge.
These angularly-disposed edges 2 are reinforced by being hemmed and are provided with a plurality of fastening means, preferably in the form of a clasp of the ball-andsocket type, 3 in the drawings representing the ball and A the socket members of the clasp. Around the outer circular edge of the main portion 1 is an extension-flap 5, adapted to be inturned and secured by suitable fastening means to the inside face of the main portion 1 when the covering is used as a cape or blanketroll covering, but adapted to be extended when the covering is to be used as a tent. At the center of the main portion 1 is arranged a hood or cap-piece 6, suitably provided with fastening means of the character heretofore mentioned and adapted to be secured and close the apex of the tent when used as a tent-covering and to be unfastened and folded down to form a collar, as in Fig. 1, when used as a cape.
7 represents openings for the arms covered by the flaps 8, and a suitable pocket may also be provided, as illustrated at 9.
10 represents buckles suspended on one end of the fastening-straps 11, secured to the outside of the covering and normally passing through slots therethrough covered by the flaps 12. The free ends of the straps are adapted to be passed through the covering to the outside thereof when the same is to be used as a covering for the blanket-roll, as illustrated in Fig. 8, and passed through the buckle in the manner indicated at Fig. 10 for adjustably but securely fastening the free ends of the straps.
13 represents openings formed around the The bottom of the hem portion of the covercircumferential edge of the extension-flap 5, in which openings are secured'the metallic member 14, having the central transverse arms 15, forming a pivotal support for the tent-pegs 16, which are adapted to be retained in a folded position'within the space formed between the extension-flap 5 and the outer portion of the main body 1 of the covering when the extension-flap is inturned and secured thereto. A
The fastening means for securing the outer edge of the extension-flap 5 to the inside face of the main portion 1 is preferably of the balland socket type of clasp heretofore men tioned; but for the purposes of describing the manner of folding or creasing the extensionflap to prevent bulging when inturned and se cured I have designated the socket and ball members as 4 and 4 respectively, in Figs. 5 to 7. On each side of the socket member 4 and located on the outside face of the extension-flap are the ball members 3 of another pair of clasps, adapted to engage with the socket members 3, disposed a short distance therefrom, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, one of these clasps 3 3 being shown locked in position on the left-hand side of Fig. 5 and unclasped on the right-hand side of said figure.
When used as a garment or cape, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the center flap 6 isunfastened and turned down, forminga collar portion, and the angular edges 2 are secured to each other, the arms passing through the opening 7.
In pitching the tent the outer edge of the extension-flap is unclasped from the main portion 1 and the tent-pegs are driven inthe ground on the line of a circle having a radius the length of the rifle, the covering being of such size as to adapt the use of the rifle for its center pole, or a pole other than the rifle may be used, if desired. When the pegs have all been driven in position, the cap or hood 6 is securely fastened by the members 3 and 4 of the clasps thereon, and the muzzle of the rifle is inserted beneath the peak of the hood, as in Fig. 3, and upon swinging the stock inward the tent is pitched.
If it is desired to use the rifle for any purpose while it is being used as the tentpole', it may be withdrawn without removing the tent-pegs, so that the tent-covering will fall on the ground in position to be readily raised and covering and protecting any such articles as may be thereunder.
When the. covering is used for a cover for the blanket-roll, the extension-flap is fastened up like when worn as a cape, the front being fastened also and the whole laid flat on the ground and doubled over in the position shown in Fig. 8, the straps 11 having been pulled through to the outside and the hood portion folded as" shown, when the blanketroll (indicated by a) may be placed in position.
ing is then first folded over theblanket-roll and the whole rolled up and the straps passed therearound and passed at their free ends through the buckles 10 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 10.
- I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction, as it is obvious'that many modifications might be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A covering adapted for use as a combined garment and shelter-tent, comprisinga substantially circular body portion having an. opening therein extending from its central portion to its outer edge, in combination With foldably-mounted tent-pegs disposed circumferentially therearound, means for securing said tent-pegs in a folded position, and means for securing the edges of said opening.
