Description
G..A.'.WATKINS, OF PROCTOR'SVILL'E, VERMONT.
Letters Patent No. 76,569, dated April 7, 1868.
-IMPROVED CHAIR-SEAT;
ttetlgrhtle referrer in it tlgrss @titers ntertt tnt vmating tutt nf tts time,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNq' Be it known that I, G. A. WATKIN'S, of Proctorsville, in the county Vof'Windson and State of Vermont,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chair-Seats; and I dov hereby declare that the following is a' full,'elear, and exact description thereof, which Will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a new andlimproved mode of securing bottoms in-the seat-frames of chairs, and
is more especially designed for the securing of th'e ordinary cane-bottoms in the seat-frames.
At present the cane is woven by hand in the seat-frameat considerable labor and expense, the strips of cane being passed Vthrough holes in the seat-frame;
Bymy improvement the cane may b'e woven in a loom constructed for that pnrpose,'the woven cane cut into pieces of suitable dimensions, according to the size of thei-seat-frames, and secured thereto withithe greatest facility.
Wire-cloth and other material used for bottoms may also be secured in the seat-frames by the same means.`
In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a plan or top view oi', a portion of a seat-frame, having a cane seat secured to it according to my invention. 'y
Figure 2*, a section of the same, taken in the line a: :v,'g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like-parts.
A represents a portion of the seat-frame of a chair, which may be constructed in the usual'way. .The top of this frame has a groove, a, made in it all around to receiveistrips B, a strip being in each rail b of the seat-v frame, the abutting-endsof the strips `being bevelled to form mitre-joints, c, as shown in iig. 1.
The bottom, C, after being cut ofthe proper size, has its edges bent down into the grooves a, andthe strips B are then inserted in the grooves, and drawn down therein, and secured by screws the latter passing up through the bottom of the rails b into the strips B, as shown clearly in fig. 2. p
By this simple Ameans the bottom u'ill be held firmly in position, and in case of a bottom becominginjured or broken, a new-one can be applied without anyr diicultjwhatever, and by any'person of ordinary ability, the services of a mechanic' not being required for that purpose. l l
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The securin of bottoms in chairs b havin Grooves a made in the u er surface of each rail b ofthe 'seat.
g y g e PP frame, andhaving-strips B-to fit in said grooves to 'clamp and firmly hold the edges ofthe bottom in the grooves, the strips being drawn into the grooves, and firmly secured in position by screws d or other means, substantially as set forth.
G. A. WATKINS. Witnesses:
