To a/ZZ whom it noa/y concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY KIRIIE WHITE, J r., and JERvIs R. HARBECK, citizens or' the United States, and residents of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented anew and useful Container-Top, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to removable tops for cans and other containers; and the objects of IO our improvement are to provide a top that is simple in construction. that can easily be removed, easily replaced, and when replaced will be tightly held in place.
We attain these objects by the construction I5 illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure l is a plan of the head of the can with the top in place. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line B B of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a 2O plan of the top, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line A A of Fig. l.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
It is often desirable with many substancessuch as spices, soap powders, and salt-to have them in containers provided with sifter's, and again it is preferable to have a large opening in the container through which a larger quantity may be poured and for refilling. This container we have provided is formed with a head having a large .annular opening over which tits a removable top provided with a number of holes, so as to serve as a sitter.
In the drawings, the body l of the container is provided with a lower head 2 and an annular upper head 3. The heads are secured to the body by Jorming'them with grooves, placing the ends of the body in the grooves, and then rolling down the edges of the grooves 40 tightly onto the body. The upper head has an outwardly-projecting circular flange il, shaped somewhat like an inverted L, which serves to center the top 5. The head is further provided with a plurality of slots 6, preferably radial, of which two are shown in the drawings; but one will be suiiicient for small containers, while a greater number will be necessary for large containers. The metal at one side of the slots is elevated sutiiciently to permit the arms 7 ot the top to enter the 50 slots. The top has a circular elevation 8 formed to lit easily over the circular flange 4l of the head and is revolublethereon. The lugs 9 project upward, so that the top may be turned by pressing against them. Then the top is in place and is turned to the left, Fig. 1, the arms 7 will be turned out of the slots, and the top may be removed. When the top is placed onto the head and turned to the right, the ends of the arms will enter the slots. As these arms are tapered, they will -i-nally fill the slot and wedge, and thus hold the top from turning. As a precaution, the-: projections l() are formed on the head, which will enter the depressions l1 in the lower side 65 of the top, and thus hold the top from turning. As the top is of sheet metal and elastic, moderate pressure on the lugs 9 will force the top to ride up on the projections 10.
To prevent the material in the container from sifting out through the holes in the top,
a piece of paper or other thin material l2 is placed over the circular opening in the head before the top is put in place. It' saturated with parafhn, it will form an air-tight seal. The top is provided with holes 13, so it may act as a sifter.
Having now. described our improvement, what we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is SO l. In a container, the combination of a body, an annular head secured to the same having a circular flange and a plurality of radial slots,
a top having a flanged cylindrical portion and revoluble on said flange on the head, tapering 8 5 arms extending from said cylindrical part or' the top adapted to engage in said slots, the central line of said arms being concentric with the cylindrical part of the top, lugs attached to said top for turning the same, and means to secure said top from turning projecting from the head.
2. In a container, the combination of the body, a lower head secured to the same, an upper head secured to the body and having a circular opening and a projecting circular flange surrounding said opening, said head having a plurality of radial slots, the material of the head on one side of each slot being elevated, a top having a cylindrical portion and revoluble on said flange, slightly -tapering arms on said top to pass into said slots to secure said top to the head, and a seal held between the head and top. i

In a container, the combination of a body, an annular head secured to the same having a projecting' flange and a plurality of' radial slots between the flange and the outer edge, a top having a cylindrical portion revoluble on said flange, and a flange projecting from said cylindrical portion, said flange having projecting arms to engage in the slots in said head, the central line of said arms being' concentric with the cylindrical portion of the top.
4. In a container, the combination of' the body, a head for the same having a circular flange and a slot between the flange and the outer edge, a top comprising` a cylindrical portion to fit said circular flange and having a flat projecting flange at its lower end, an arm projecting from said flange of' said top and in the same plane adapted to enter the slot in said head and pass beneath said head to secure the top to the head.
5. In a container, the combination of a body, a head for the same having a central flange and radial slots between the flange and the outer edge, a top comprising a cylindrical portion and revoluble on said central flange, a flat circular, flange projecting from the one end of the cylindrical portion and having eXtensions, one portion of each extension being turned up to form a lug whereby said top may be turned and another. portion of each forming an arm adapted to pass through said slots and engage below said head to hold the top in place, the central line of said arm being concentric with the cylindrical portion of the top.
