COFFlN-BOX.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 765,102, dated July 12, 1904. Application filed September 5, 1903. Serial No. 172,118. (No model.)
-0 all whom, zit flea/y concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES D. ROWLAND and PETER R. COVER, citizens of the United States, residing at Polo, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cofiin or Casket Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved construction of box adapted to be used for the purpose of holding a coflin or casket.
The object of our invention is to provide a folding or knockdown box which can be opened and spread out upon the ground and the coffin or casket can be placed therein and the covering-box set up and fastened together before it is lowered into the grave.
Another object of our invention is to provide a knockdown or folding box which can be utilized as a shipping-box for carrying cofiins or caskets.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out inthe claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a box constructedin accordance with our invention, said box being set up and closed. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the box opened and spread out. Fig. 3 is an end view, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view illustrating the fastening means.
In carrying out our invention we employ a bottom A, to which the sides B are hinged, as hereinafter explained. The top consists of two sections C and C, one section being secured to one side and the other section to the other side, and the ends are also made in two sections D and D, connected, respectively, to the top sections C and C E indicates straps secured to the under side of the bottom adjacent the ends, said straps being bent upwardly, as shown at E, and the straps F, which are connected to the top and side portions, are hinged to the ends of the 1 straps E, as shown at F, and in this manner the sides carrying the top and end sections are \hinged to the bottom of the box. One of the straps F has a tongue F punched upwardly herefrom, and the other strap has pivot-ears extending upwardly therefrom and between which is pivoted a lever G, carrying a bail G, which is adapted to engage the tongue F for the purpose of locking the top and end sections of the box together, as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The bottom A is cut away at each end for a greater portion of its width, leaving end projections A, and when the box is set up the lower edges of the ends D and D will fit between the projections A, and in order to hold the meeting edges of the end sections in their proper positions we provide the strap E with longitudinal extensions E, which extend slightly beyond the ends of the bottom and are turned upwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to provide suitable rests for the end sections. It will thus be seen that in order to set the box up and close it it is only necessary to turn the sides up to perpendicular positions, and the end and top sections will be brought together and the bails G placed over the tongue F and the lever Gr turned down, as shown in Fig. 1. In order to open the box, it is only necessary to disengage the fastener and throw the sides back to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will thus be seen that we provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and efiiicient construction of box capable of carrying out the purpose for which it is intended.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
A box of the kind described comprising a bottom having end projections, the straps arranged transversely upon the bottom, the sides and the top and end sections connected to the sides, the straps connected to the sides and top sections, said straps being hinged at their lower ends to the bottom straps, atongue carried by one strap, alever pivoted to the other strap, and carrying a bail, and the longitudinal extensions of the transverse bottom straps, said longitudinal straps being extended be yond the ends of the bottom and turned wardly, substantially as described.
