LEGGING- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,065, dated July 12, 1904, Application filed October 20, 1903. Serial No. 177,736. No m del-) To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. GALLERY and ROY SETTLE, citizens of the United States, residing at St; Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to that class of leggings intended to reach down to and cover the entire foot; and in our improved legging we extend and hold the lower edge of the same, by the improved means hereinafter described, over the edge of the sole of the boot or shoe instead of at the sole where it joins the upper, our object being, first, to exclude the water from entering the boot or shoe at the crevice where the upper is attached to the sole, and, second, to provide an inexpensive means for holding the legging securely in said position.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the legging as it appears upon the boot or shoe, the corner of the legging carrying the strap-buckle being thrown back to permit a view of the sole of the boot or shoe. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the legging as it appears when strapped on the foot, showing by dotted lines the toe-piece fastened inside the legging and with which the stirrup has connection; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the toe-piece and the legging broken away and a longitudinal section of the stirrup, its ends forming connection with said toe-piece.

The body of the legging A is made of any suitable material, and we ordinarily use hooks 6 Z) and eyelets c c, as shown, in connection with a lacing (Z, for fastening; but we do not confine ourselves to this particular mode of attaching the same. Strips of canvas are inserted vertically inside the legging from top to bottom to strengthen the hold of said hooks and eyelets, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Inside the toe of the legging we insert a bowedstrip E, of pliable metal or other suitable material, fastening the same securely therein by rivets e e or in any convenient manner. Said strip E extends backward to about the line of the ballot the foot. It is adapted to set solidly against the edge of the soleB of the boot or shoe to extend upward above the crevice where the upper of the boot or shoe connects with the sole and downward to a line horizontal with the bottom of the sole, thereby preventing absolutely the entrance of water through the crevice formed between the top of the sole and the connection of the upper therewith. A stirrup H, adapted to support the foot and draw the toe part of the legging and strip E down taut, is fastened at end li to said strip E at a line forward of the ball of the foot, the opposite end it of said stirrup being inserted between the legging material and said strip and bent downwardly inside the same, as shown in Fig. 3. The material of the stirrup being pliable, its end it can be readily withdrawn from connection with strip E or lengthened or shortened, and it being thus adjustable a legging can be fitted and adapted to boots or shoes having soles of different widths or thicknesses or to those of any size. It will be understood that the particular manner of attaching said stirrup is immaterial, the essential feature being that it shall be made adjustable, thus adapting it to boots or shoes having soles either light or heavy. The part of the legging backward of said strip E is drawn down over the edge of the sole and held there securely by means of strap K and buckle K or in any similar way.

What we claim, and desire ters Patent, is
