WAIST-BELT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,999, dated July 12, 1904.

Be it known that I, THEODORE GALLERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved VVaist-Belt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a buckleless waist belt which will fit snugly to the waist of the wearer, the said belt comprising a body-section, a front locking-section, and a cover-flap for the locking-section so constructed that it will lie fiat in the fastened or closed position of the belt, remaining in cover position thereon, imparting to the belt the appearance of continuity.

A further purpose of the invention is to so construct a belt of the character described thatit may be quickly and conveniently placed in position on the wearer and removed and which can be Worn with comfort.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a belt constructed in accordance with my invention,

the belt being shown with its ends connected and the cover-flap partially opened out. Fig. 2 is a horizontalsection through the front or locking section of the belt and a portion of the body, the belt being fully closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the latch-plate constituting a part of the locking-section of the belt. Fig. 4: is a front elevation of a part of the plate constituting a second element in the locking-section of the belt. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the keeper-plate, taken practically on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4:; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through a latchelement of slightly-different construction.

B represents the locking-section for the belt, comprising a latch member 6, a keeper member b, and a cover flap or member 6 A space intervenes between the ends of the body, which space is bridged by the said locking-section B.

In constructing the body section A a knuckle 10 is formed at one end and a knuckle 11 is formed at the opposite end. The latch member 6 is hinged to the knuckle 11 and is of less length than the length of the space between the ends of the body. This latch member 6 consists of a thin metal plate 12, suitably curved, and a hook 13 at the outer end of the plate, the shank of which hook is secured to the inner face of the plate by rivets 14 or their equivalents, and at the opposite end of the said plate a transverse slot 15 is made, through which the knuckle 11 of the body of the belt passes, thereby providing a hinged connection between the body of the belt and the latch member b. The construction of this latch member 6 is completed by adding thereto a covering 16, of fabric or of leather, according to the material of which the body of the belt is constructed. The keeper member 6 also consists of a thin metal plate 17, properly curved; but the keeper member 6 extends from end to end of the body of the belt and is provided with a slot 18 at one end to receive the knuckle 10 of the body of the belt and in this manner the said keeper member I) is hinged to the belt-body. The plate 17 of the keeper member b is provided with transverse slots 19, adapted to receive the hook 13 of the latch member, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and as is illustrated especially in Figs. A and 5. The edges of the slots 19 in the said plate 17 are olfset or struck outward, as is shown at 20 in the said figures vhereby to enable the hook 13 to readily enter any one of the slots and to have firm engagement with the keeper-plate after such entrance. The construction of the keeper member 6 is completed by a suitable covering21, having openings therein corresponding to the slots in the plate 17.

When the belt is to be closed or fastened upon the person, the hook 13 is made to enter one of the slots 19, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and a loose loop 22 is slid over the latch and the keeper members, as is illustrated in Fig. 1. In order to conceal these two elements of the locking-section B of the belt, I employ a cover member 5 which lends the appearance of continuity to the belt, and this cover member 5 is in the nature of a flap and is made of leather or of fabric-in fact, of the same material of which the body of the belt is constructed. The free end 23 of the cover member 6 is more or less pointed, while its opposite end is provided with a tab 24:, and this tab is preferably passed inward through the'end slot 18 in the plate 17 of the keeper member 6, and is then smoothly secured in any approved manner to the inner face of the body of the belt, as is shown in Fig. 2. After the belt has been fastened on the person the free end 23 of the cover member 6 is slipped through the loose loop 22 at the outer face of the belt, as is illustrated in Fig. 2, whereupon the free end of the cover member passes over upon the end portion of the body of the belt in which the knuckle 11 is formed.

Instead of making the latch member?) in the manner shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it may be constructed as illustrated in Fig. 6, in which the only difference consists in that the hook 13 is notdirectly attached to the plate 12,but at the corresponding end of the plate a pocket25 is formed at the inner ride of the member 6, and in this pocket 25 one end of an elastic 26 is secured, the other end of the elastic carrying a hook 13, which is adapted to enter any one of the slots 19 in the keeper member 6'.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. AWaist-beltconsisting of a body-section formed of pliable material, and a locking-section formed of rigid material, the locking-section comprising a latch member having hinge connection with one end of the body-section and a keeper member having hinge connection with the other end of the body-section, the latch member being provided with ahook and the keeper member with slots to be e11- gaged by said hook, said rigid members which form the locking-section being curved to conform approximately to the waist of the wearer.

2. A waist-belt consisting of a body-section formed of pliable material, and a locking-section formed of metal, said locking-section comprising a latch member having hinge connection with one end of the body-section and a keeper member having hinge connection with the other end of the body-section, the latch member being provided with a hook, and the keeper member with slots to be engaged by said hook, said metallic members which form the locking-section being curved to conform approximately to the waist of the wearer and being covered with material similar to that from which the body-section of the belt is made, the covering of the keeper member having openings corresponding to the slots therein, and a cover member adapted to bridge the space between the ends of the belt when the belt is closed upon a person, said cover member being formed of the same material as that used in the body portion of the belt and being hinged at one end to one end of said body portion, the hinge being the same one that unites one of the locking members with said body portion.

3. A waist-bclt comprising a body-section having knuckles formed at its ends, a keeper member having hinged connection with one of the knuckles and when the belt is closed extending substantially to the opposite knuckle of the belt, a keeper member hinged to the latter-named knuckle on the belt-body, the

keeper member being provided with slots and 1 the latch member with a hook to enter the said slots, and a cover member adapted to bridge the space between the ends of the belt when the belt is closed upon a person, which cover member is hinged to the outer end portion of the belt, and a keeper for the said cover member, as and for the purpose described.

4. A belt comprising a body having knuckles at its ends and a locking-section between the ends of the body, the locking-section comprising a keeper member hinged to one end of the body and provided with a series of openings outwardly offset at one edge, a latch member pivoted to the opposite end of the body, a hook carried by the latch member, adapted to enter any one of the slots in the keeper member, a cover member hinged to one end of the body at its outer portion, and adapted in the closed position of the belt to extend beyond the opposite end of the body, and a loop adapted to receive the free end of the cover member, for the purpose described.

5. A waist-belt, consisting of abody-section and a locking-section, the locking-section comprising a keeper member and a cooperating latch member each provided with a vertical slot at its outer end, the ends of the body-section being provided with loops passing through said vertical slots to form hinges for the outer ends of the two members of the locking-section, means for adjustably connecting the latch-section with the keeper-section, a cover hinged at one end of the body-section to extend across the locking-section and lap the other end of the body-section, and a keeper for the free end of said cover.
