SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,348, dated July 5, 1904.

`u-seful improvements in fishing-reels, and

aims particularly to provide new and novel means, hereinafter morespecilically described, for liXedly retaining within the reel-frame the bearings for the front end of the spool and m u l tipl yi iig-gear.

The invention further aims to provide a fishing-reel with new and novel means, herel inafter more specifically described, for fixedly retaining within the reel-frame a head-plate carrying the bearing' for the front end of the spool and the multiplying-gear.

The invention further aims to provide a fishing-rcel with new and novel means, here inafter more specifically described, for preventing the rotation of the head-plate carrying the bearing for the front end of the spool and the multiplying-gear and to further prevent the rotationof the cap for the front end of the spool.

rlhe invention further aims to provide a lishing-reel which is so constructed as to permit, when occasion requires, of the removal of the spool, as well as other parts which go to make up the reel, and to also permit of the ready assembling' of the parts when separated.

The invention further aims to construct a fishingreel which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and 'particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

In describing the invention` in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which'm Figure l is a longitudinal section of the reel. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the reel-frame. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the head-plate ca rrying the bearings for the front end of the spool and the multiplyinggear. Fig. fi `is an elevation of the front cap, and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the closure-plate for the rear end of the frame.

Referring to the drawings by reference characters, l denotes the reel frame con structed from a short tube of suitable material, said tube being cut away in such a inanner as to forni a pair of end bands 2 3, a plurality of connecting-bars a, and a connectingbar 5 of greater width than the `bars 4L, and to said connectingbar 5 is suitably connected, the reel-seat (5. The end band 2 of the reelframe 1 is of greater width than the band 3, and that end of the reel-frame l on which is arranged the band 2 is termed the front7 end of the fisl1ingreel. Although, as shown, the band 2 is of greater width than the band 3, yet said bands may be of the sanne width; but preferably the band 2 is constructed of greater width than the band 3.

rl`he inner face of the band 2 is suitably bored away so as to form a shoulder or seat thereon near the inner end thereof. The inner face of the band 2 is also provided with screw-threads 8. These threads extend on the inner face of the band 2 from a point slightly removed from the shoulder or seat 7 to the outer end of the band.

The end band 3 is internally screw-threaded,

The closure-plate 33 is provided with the bearing 34 for the rear end of the spindle 18 of the spool 19. The closure-plate 34 carries a drag mechanism 35 and a click mechanism 36, and the rear end of l the `spindle 18Acarries the pinion 37, which is adapted to be engaged by the click mechanism.

From the foregoing construction it is evidentthat a-iishing-.reelis devised by whichthe bearings for the front end of the spooland themultiplying-gearareiixedlyretained-withinthe reel-frame, and, furthermore, that the head-.plate whichcarries said -bearings 'is prevented from rotating, as well as -the cap `for the front end of the frame. Furthermore, a reel is set up which-can be readily'talenapart and assembled,l and it is -thought the manyiadvantagesfof a fishing-,reel `constructed in accordance with the foregoing description vcan be readily understood, and it will furthermore be evident that changes, variations, .andmodilications -can `be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the inventionor-sacriiicing anyof its advantages, and Itherefore do not wish to 'restrict :myself to the details of sconstruction Vhereinloefore described and as shown in the accompanying drawings, but `reserve the Aright to malte such changes, variations, and modifications-.as come properly -within the scope of the vprotection prayed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desi-re -tosecure vby Letters Patent, 'is-- 1. A'iishing-reel comprisingartubular reelfrarne provided with an end hand having-its inner face fprovided `with screw-.threads and a shoulder andfthatportionof its inner face `between -the shoulder and screw-threads smooth, a :head-plate .mounted in said Vhand against the smooth inner face thereof and .against said shoulder, anda screw-threaded collar engaging -the threads ofthe band for iti-xedly securing the' plate in position.

A iiShing-reeleomprising aituloular reelframe provided vwith :an interiorly-screwthreaded end band, a head-plate mounted in said band and :carrying vbearings .for .the vfront l end .of l.the reel-spool and multiplying-gear, and ya screw-threaded collar `engaging the threads .of 'the band for iixedly securing 4the plate in position.

3. .A fishing-reelicomprising atubularreelframe having a pairof end fbands, onefof which is interiorlyscrew-threaded and further provided with :a shoulder atapoint removed from the inner end ofthe screw-threads.

A fishing-reel comprising a tubular reel- IOO trame having a pair of end bands, one of which is internally screw-threaded and further pro vided with a shoulder at a point removed from its screw-threads, a plate within the band and` 5. A fishing-reel comprising a reel-frame having' an end band, said hand provided with a shoulder on its inner face and having its inner face further provid ed with sere w-th reads extending' at a point removed from said shoulder to the outer edge of the band.

6. A fishing-reel comprising a reel-frame having an end hand, said band provided with a shoulder on its inner face and having its inner :face further provided with screw-threads extending at a point removed from said shoulderto the upper edge of the' band, said band further provided with a notch in its outer edge.

7. A iishing-reel comprising a reel-frame having a pair of internally-screw-threaded end bands, one oi' said bands provided on its inner face with a shoulder at a point removed from its screw-threads.

8. A lishing-reel comprising a tu bular frame having' an end band, said end band provided on its inner face with screw-threads and a shoulder, a hearing-supporting plate mounted in said band against said shoulder. and means engaging the threads of said band for iixedly securing the plate in position.

9. A ishing-reel comprising' a tubular .frame having an end hand, said band provided on its inner face with screw-threads and a shoulder, a bearing-supporting plate mounted in said hand against said shoulder, means engaging the threads of said band and with said plate to prevent the movement of` the latter, and an externally-screw-threaded collar engaging the threads oi' said band for retaining the plate within the hand.

10- A fishing-reel comprising' a reel-frame provided with front and rear screw-threaded end bands, a bearing-supporting plate arranged in said front band, means engaging the threads of the front band for lixedly securing said plate in position, a cap connected to said front end band for closingl the l'ront end of the reel, and a plate provided with an exteriorlyscrew-threaded flange adapted to engage with the threads of the rear end band for closing the rear end of the reel.

In aiisliing-1'eel, the combination with a reel-frame, a reel-spool and a multiplyinggear, of a head-plate mounted in one end oi' said irame and provided with a housing, a recessed protuberance, a shouldered stud', and abearing for the multil'ilying-gear, said recessed protuberance forming a bearing for the front end of the reel-spool. A

In a lishing-reel, the combination with a reel-i`rame, a reel-spool and a multiplyinggear, of a head-plate mounted in oneend of said frame and provided with a housing', a recessed protuberance, a shouldered stud, and a hearing for the multiplying-gear, said recessed protuherance 'forminga bearing Jror the front end of the spool, said housing' and protuher- `ance cut away to permit oi the setting and operation olI the multiplying-g'ear.

13. In a fishing-reel, the comhinatlon with a `reel-i`rame, a reel-spool and a multil'ilyingoperation of the multiplying-gear, a cap inclosing said plate and provided with an opening' adapted to receive the end of said stud to prevent the movement oi the plate, and means mounted upon said protuberance for connec`t-` ing said cap to the frame.

14. In a fishing-reel, the combination with a. reel-frame, a reel-spool and a multiiiilyinggear,oiaheadplate mounted in one end of said frame and provided with a housing', a recessed protuherance, a shouldered stud, a bearing for the multiplying-gear, said recessed protuberance forming a bearing for the front end of the spool, said housing and protuberance cutaway to permit of the setting and operation of the multiplying-gear, a cap in closing said plate and provided with an opening' adapted to receive the end ot' said stud to prevent the movement oi the plate, means mounted upon said protuberance for connecting said cap to the frame, and means carried hy the cap and engaging in the frame for preventing' the movement o1 the cap when the latter is secured to the frame.

In a lishingreel, the combination with a reel-frame, a reel-spool and a multilgilying-` gear, of a head-plate secured therein and provided on its outer face with a bearing'for the `multiply1ng-gear, a housing, and a recessed `tuberance forming a hearing i'or one end of the spool, and means engag'ing in the other end of the frame for forming a bearing for the other end of the spool.

17. In a lishing-reel, the combination with a reel-spool and a rmiltiplyinggear, of a reeliirame provided with a front and rear end hand,

head-plate mounted in said front band and provided With a housing carrying a recessed protuberance which forms a bearing for one end of the spool, said plate further carrying' a bearing for the multiplying-gear, means engaging with the screw-threads of the front band for fixedly securing said plate in position, and means forming a bearing for the other end of the spool, said bearing forming means engaging the threads of the rear band.

18. In a iishing-reel, the combination With a reel-spool and a multiplying-gear, of a reelframe provided With a front and rear end band, each of which is interiorly screw-threaded, a head-plate mounted in said front band and provided with a housing carrying a recessed protu berance which forms a bearing for one end of the spool, said plate further carrying a bearing for the multiplying gear, means engaging with the screw-threads of the front band for iixedly securing said plate in position, means forming bearings for the other end of the spool, said bearing forming means engaging the threads of the rear band, a cap mounted upon the front band, and means mounted upon said protuberance for securing said cap to the reel-spool and a multiplying-gear, of a reelframe provided with a front and rear end band, each of which is interiorly screw-threaded, a

. head-plate mounted in said front band andprovided With a housing carrying a recessed protuberance which forms a bearing for one end of the spool, said plate further carrying a bearing for the multiplying-gear, means engaging with the screw-threads of the front band for Xedly securing said plate in position, means forming a bearing for the other-end of the spool, said bearing forming means engaging the threads of the rear band, a cap mounted upon the front band, means mounted upon said protuberance for securing said cap to the frame, means carried by said cap and engaging in said frame to prevent the movement of the cap when the latter is secured to the frame, and means carried by the plate and engaging i`n the cap to prevent the rotation of the plate when secured in the frame.
