TO ALL WHOM IT MAYHCONGERN i Be it known thntI, RICHARD. S.`CLAnK, of GreotBend, in the county 'of Susquehanna, and State of Penn-l sylvnniu., have invented a new and-usefullmprnvement in Letter-Envelopes; and I do hereby declare that the following` is n full, clear, und exact description lof the same, reference beingvhed to the accompanying drawings, -in whieh Figure 1, the envelope opened. 4
Figure 2, the same opened at the end.
Figure 3, the envelope closed.
The object ofthis invention is to -provide nn envelope that cannot he tampered with, when sealed, without beeomng mutilated, torn, or disgured. Y
This is done by cutting out the paper for the envelope `so es to' leave the smell ilap A upon the part to be gummed, which,- when turned down, will fold over upon the fece of the envelope, es shown in fig. 3. When the envelope is sealed itwill be impossible to mise the senledpart either on the face or back of the envelope, without mutilating it,- nnd showing that it hnsheen tampered with.
Should this safety-envelope be adopted by the Government, that part which laps over on the face of the envelope can have the postage stamped or printed thereon; end, should the envelope become useless, hy Wrong superseription or otherwise, the stamp can'he detnehed, and used on any other envelope.
Fig. 2 shows the manner of cutting out the envelope when it is desirable to have it open at the end.
What I elnimrmy invention, nud-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Theflap A, so placed upon the envelope as to fold over on to the face ofthe envelope, substantially as and for the purpose described.
